Description

The Northwest School seeks an experienced Upper School Physics Teacher who will teach three sections of Physics to 12th grade students. This is a 10- month .75 FTE position.

The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to about 380 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory. Please note: At this time we are hiring for a part-time math teacher and part-time Physical Education teachers. It is possible that the successful candidate may be able to fill more than one open position, depending on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach three sections of Physics to 12th grade students
  • Coordinate curricula with other science teachers and grade level teachers.
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers to facilitate cross-disciplinary experiential learning opportunities for students, including a two-week cross-disciplinary Summit course.
  • Serve as the academic advisor to a group of upper school students.
  • Co-teach a two-week immersive, cross-disciplinary Summit course at the end of the school year.
  • Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department; engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development beyond school based in-service; support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers; participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings; and know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school.
Marginal Responsibilities:
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school's mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, inclusion, environmental sustainability, and global perspective.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Physics or a related field and a minimum of 1 year experience teaching Science to upper school students is required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to establish an effective learning environment and use a wide range of methods.
  • Knowledge and experience with differentiation to effectively design curricula to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Ability to provide additional outside-of-classroom instruction when necessary for remedial or accelerated work.
  • Ability to assess student progress through a variety of assessment instruments. Familiarity with Standards-Based Grading practices is preferred.
  • An ability to work both independently and as a productive member of a team.
