Basic Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English Language
  • Compliance with 38 U.S.C
  • 7403(f) - proficiency in basic written and spoken English is mandatory for direct patient care roles
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by an accrediting agency such as The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  • Successful completion of a master's level bridge program in nursing can lead to registration as a nurse with a state licensing board
  • Possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth
  • Validation of foreign nursing education equivalency by a recognized entity accepted by VA is required for credit higher than an associate degree/entry level
  • Current registration as a Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT)

Exception:
Candidates who meet basic education requirements but lack the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade as GNT while actively pursuing licensure.

NOTE:
Grandfathering Provision - Current VHA employees in 0610 series satisfying qualification standard are deemed to have met all requirements for their grade, including education and licensure/certification

Grade Determinations:
Grade assignment is based on Scope, Education, and Dimension criteria that vary for each grade and level within the assessment:

  • Requirements for Nurse I, Level I and subsequent levels are outlined in detail for each on the online assessment
  • Duties of nurses at different levels, from delivering fundamental care to demonstrating leadership, are clearly defined

Physical Requirements:
The role involves various physical demands including lifting, carrying, pushing, and standing for extended periods. Exposure to potentially combative patients may also occur.

Duties:
The Medical/Surgical Staff Nurse provides expert care within medical/surgical areas of nursing, collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure quality care for Veteran patients.

Duties include:

  • Discharge planning and referrals
  • Assessing patient/relative knowledge and skills in healthcare management
  • Planning interventions for promoting health
  • Classifying patients based on acuity
  • Directing nursing care and initiating patient care conferences
