POSITION SUMMARY:


The Controller oversees and manages HIAS' day-to-day financial operations while maintaining accounting records and internal controls in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

This position directs all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, payroll, bank reconciliations, audit, insurance and tax reports, and fixed assets.

The position ensures accurate and timely preparation of internal financial reports and submission of external reporting. They will also manage (dotted line) regional finance staff. This position will be responsible for ensuring timeliness and accuracy of International Programs General Ledger consolidation and reporting.

The Controller will also assist the Chief Financial Officer with managing all investment accounting related to HIAS' Endowment and Frozen Pension plan.

The position also has the lead responsibility of managing agency global cashflow. The position will lead all HQ external audits (US GAAP, Uniform Guidance, Pension and any Project based audits).
Note, the salary range for this position is $150, ,000.00.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
FINANCIAL STATEMENTS & EXTERNAL REPORTING
Oversees the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reports.

Prepares all schedules and works with the external audit firm to ensure a smooth, accurate, and timely annual financial audit.

Provides information to external audit firm to enable the firm's preparation of Form 990 and any other statutory reporting including CHAR 500.

Ensures timely and accurate monthly close of international Country Office General Ledger.
Ensures Country Offices are completing the Monthly Finance Review (MFR) on a monthly basis.
Provides leadership to Regional Finance staff through effective communication, review and support.
Analyzes company's financial results with respect to revenue trends, costs and compliance with budget.
Maintains two week and six month rolling cash flow model and keeps management updated.
Assists CFO and Vice President, Budget & Fiscal Compliance in financial planning and results management.

COMPLIANCE

Complies with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, and ensures all returns are filed timely and accurately.

Oversees the annual financial audit with external auditors and ensures audit is completed on a timely basis.
Formulates, recommends and implements sound fiscal policies, procedures and internal controls.
Maintains catalog of financial and accounting policies and procedures, subject to the updates mentioned above.

GENERAL LEDGER

Oversees all financial transactional activity, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll, and ensures that all financial transactions and journal entries are recorded both timely and accurately in accordance with organization policies, GAAP and governmental regulations.

Manages investment accounting, reconciliation, and reporting, endowment accounting, reconciliation, and reporting, and contribution accounting, reconciliation, and reporting.
Researches treatment of accounting transactions to be in accordance with GAAP and government regulations.
Reviews key monthly account analyses; bank reconciliations, G/L to subsidiary ledger reconciliation.

Manages team's monthly closing tasks, including reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, journal entries, and adherence to monthly close calendar.

Maintains structure and ensures maximization of accounting software.
Oversees the Razor's Edge to NetSuite integration and ensures proper reconciliation occurs.
Ensures monthly closes are done on a regular and timely basis.

OTHER

Provides leadership to accounting personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication; conducts meetings to ensure that personnel are well informed of changes in programs, policies and procedures.

Assists the CFO and other members of the Executive Leadership Team (as required) with analysis and board communication as needed.

Communicates fiscal policies and procedures to all HIAS employees.
Leads and participates in special projects that further the goals of the Finance & Accounting department.
Stays abreast of trends and changes in the accounting field, including GAAP, changes in accounting standards/ASUs, etc. as they impact nonprofit organizations/agencies.

Maintains the highest level of confidentiality regarding discussions and decisions made by senior management and takes all required actions to ensure that staff adhere to these requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
CPA is required.
8-10 years of progressive financial accounting experience required.
5+ years of supervisory experience required.
Experience with accounting systems required; NetSuite experience highly preferred.
Knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Strong analytical skills and ability to problem solve.
Facilitates change by encouraging others to seek opportunities for new approaches to addressing problems and opportunities.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to lead, develop and mentor staff during organizational development and transitions.
"Bridge builder" who is able to serve multiple constituents and accomplish multiple priorities, including building and enhancing partnerships with programming areas, all the while considering the needs and priorities of the accounting/finance team.
Leader who ensures a productive working environment and confidently coaches and motivates employees to meet organizational goals.
Proven experience using technology to improve financial management systems.
Ability to effectively prioritize multiple responsibilities.
Travel, to include travel to insecure operating environments, may be required.
