The Team

As the IT Global Technology Operations (GTO) team, we strive to deliver the core technology capabilities for the foundation through innovation paired with operational excellence. We aspire to be dynamic, collaborative, technology leaders enabling mission impact with the highest standards of integrity. The Sr. Engineer IT Security and Facilities Systems is focused on designing, implementing and maintaining the related infrastructure and applications that enable us to support the foundation in achieving its goals.

This position reports to Manager, IT - Global Technology Operations.

Your Role

You will be a domain expert for technology platforms and systems supporting security and facilities functions at Gates Foundation and affiliate organization offices. You will use modern IT principles and practices to lead all aspects of related technology platforms, including access control, video monitoring and management, intrusion detection, and building management systems. You will partner with peers in IT, facilities, and global security teams to ensure solutions are fit for purpose and fit for use.

  • This position is based in Seattle, WA, USA.
  • Position will require up to 10% travel to supported facilities globally.
  • You may be assigned to an on-call rotation for critical issue to support our 24x7 GSOC.

What You'll Do

  • Develop, coordinate, and operationalize technology solutions that ensure our employees have safe, comfortable, and stable working environments.
  • Lead system design processes in partnership with consultants, security integrators and operations colleagues.
  • Communicate conceptual designs to internal teams, partners and external consultants.
  • Write high-quality documentation for system configurations, procedures, standards, and operations. Work hand in hand with project and operations teams to maintain and be responsible for the solutions.
  • Regularly collaborate with security operations and facilities personnel to ensure alignment of technology capabilities and configurations with business/customer needs and use cases.
  • Collaborate with IT Teams in the design, development and implementation of system integrations and data exchange between systems.
  • Work with team members to develop and maintain a multi-year roadmap to ensure our systems align with technological advances in these fields and across IT.
  • Work with internal teams and partners to suggest, design, and develop continuous improvement opportunities that facilitate or automate functional processes.
  • Configure, run, and optimize reports and dashboards of system access, configuration, and event data to support internal programs and partners.
  • Identify, supervise and report on key indicators for systems and technology performance, reliability and event/alarm accuracy and volumes.
  • Run planned and unplanned work in a backlog and respond to tickets.
  • Participate in cross-training and knowledge transfer with peers to ensure team flexibility.
  • Stay up to date with physical security product markets and relevant developments, releases, and innovations.

  • Coordinate device and application upgrades and patches and supervise security and vulnerability notifications for facilities and physical security platforms and products.
  • Facilitate remote support, including working with onsite technicians and integration partners local to a given site location.
  • Travel to our global offices after new work or major system upgrades are completed to accept the work on behalf of the foundation and ensure the systems are commissioned properly.
  • Assist team members and leaders in understanding and rationalizing a large portfolio of software and devices and looking for opportunities for continuous improvement and cost reduction.

Your Experience

  • We recognize that experience in this field is as valuable as a degree, and we do not require one. A BS in Engineering or Computer Science degree may be treated as equivalent.
  • Proficiency with programming languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python) and ability to write and maintain scripted solutions for integration and automation between different security systems and platforms.
  • Proficient in integrating multiple systems together using technologies such as REST APIs, JSON, and similar structures.
  • Familiarity in network architecture and server management in on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Familiarity with the building of SQL queries to serve reporting and analytics requirements and the principals of effective database administration and security.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and speech, as well as being able to prepare and present IT-related material to a wide variety of audiences, including leadership (technical and non-technical).Ability to translate technical topics for non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to approach any problem with critical thinking skills and regardless of past experience be able to break down the problem and develop a path to solution.

Growth Opportunities

  • Familiarity with or ability to gain expertise in information security concepts such as encryption, authentication and authorization as well as knowledge of specific protocols and services such as HTTPS, TLS, authentication, certificates, and certificate authorities.
  • Familiarity with or ability to gain expertise in Microsoft platforms including Entra ID, Active Directory, Azure Services, and associated documentation.
  • Familiarity with or ability to gain expertise from peers: access control panels and readers, camera hardware platforms, network cabling, intrusion system hardware, video appliances and servers, environmental control's hardware, two-way intercom and radio platforms.
  • Familiarity with or ability to gain expertise in integrating physical device layers including monitoring hardware and access control systems with their corresponding software interfaces, ensuring seamless operation and data exchange.
  • Existing or ability to obtain vendor- and industry-specific certifications in access control and video monitoring solutions, including Genetec, Lenel, and Achievement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PSP and/or CPP certification a plus
  • Experience designing, programming, and/or supporting physical security systems, including access control, video monitoring and management, intrusion detection, and building management systems. An understanding of both their function and limitations is important. Includes such platforms as Genetec, Lenel, Milestone, Everbridge, Splan and others.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn electronic equipment and wiring standards.
  • Experience supporting and implementing technology that support activities of a 24x7 Global Security Operations Center
  • Familiarity with construction design plan and design tools such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Familiarity with the Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) and supporting tools (Jira, Confluence, Mural/Miro).

The salary range for this role is $125,000 to $187,500 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences where our offices are located, in Seattle, Washington D.C., and Boston (Cambridge). The range for this role in these locations is $136,100 to $204,300 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission and new hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary range between the minimum and the midpoint salary range. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidate's job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
