  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Communications Specialist role involves coordinating the management of emergency patient referrals via 911 radio, telephone, and other communication systems swiftly. Responsibilities include receiving critical information from healthcare providers, triaging referrals for critically ill and injured patients, and documenting relevant details into hospital databases efficiently. This position reports to department leadership.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Coordinates pre-hospital emergent and non-emergent communication for trauma services activation.
    • Provides emergency communications and medical dispatch following all required protocols.
    • Collaborates with critical care transport team to maintain high patient and customer satisfaction levels.
    • Activates all transport team missions, including ground, fixed wing, rotor wing, and in-hospital assistance.
    • Handles inbound and outbound customer service communication using advanced telecommunication equipment.
    • Independently manages workload and prioritizes tasks during stressful and fast-paced situations.
    • Performs additional assigned duties as necessary.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Requires current State of Virginia certification as an EMT-A, EMT-I, EMT-P, or NREMT-P (Nationally Registered Emergency Technician - Paramedic). Consideration given to EMT-B with relevant experience and anticipated completion of EMT-A within a year.
    • Maintain current certification/lisensure upon hire and throughout employment.
    • ACLS & PALS or PEPP certification are mandatory.
    • Certification in trauma is a plus.
    • Must hold a valid CPR certification.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Two (2) years of clinical/EMS experience is a requirement.
    • Previous dispatching experience is preferred.
    • Proficiency in medical terminology comprehension is essential.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for handling high-pressure situations.
    • Excellent computer skills and ability to maintain organized records, both handwritten and digital.
    • Experience with emergency telecommunications is beneficial.
    • Demonstrated capability to build and sustain effective working relationships.
