With the change to warmer temperatures, we experience an influx of visitors of all ages and backgrounds who want to explore and be inspired by our properties. Sandy beaches, wooded trails, cultural gardens, historic homes, community supported agriculture-there are many ways for visitors to discover and explore The Trustees, and just as many opportunities for seasonal employees to make each visitor's experience special.

Position Summary:

The seasonal Ranger will work as part of a team of rangers and other staff to help manage visitor expectations, maintain the property, protect natural resources, and provide for a safe and enjoyable visitor experience. The seasonal Ranger reports to the Stewardship Manager of the Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge. Applicants may be asked to work evening/night shifts from late May through October, as well as weekends and holidays.

In This Role You Will:
  • Representing The Trustees in accordance with the messages developed and provided by the organization's Engagement Department.
  • Checking all vehicles entering the refuge for permits or passes
  • Reporting safety concerns, incidents, and maintenance needs to supervisor
  • Cleaning and inspecting work areas, parking lots, beach and trails
  • Environmental education-occasional tours
  • Effectively and professionally manage visitor complaints.
  • Accurately report incidents according to Trustees policy.
  • Assisting with parking vehicles.
  • Assisting with special events.
Essential Functions:
  • Providing assistance and information to visitors at the Wauwinet Gatehouse
  • Enforcing refuge rules and regulations
  • Maintaining the property by removing garbage, fixing fences, and maintaining signs, and reporting issues to the manager
  • Maintaining trails with the team
  • Cleaning structures as necessary
  • Aiding in an active nesting shorebird management program as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.
Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to provide good customer service
  • Prior experience working and driving in a barrier beach environment
  • Prior experience working as part of a team
  • High School diploma or equivalent
Other Helpful Experience
  • Experience driving vehicles on sand and extracting vehicles that have become stuck in sand
  • Knowledge and experience with tools and equipment required for the job (e.g., winches, jacks, tow cables, power tools)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and a s part of a team
  • Perform basic maintenance for safe operation of all vehicles, including washing and cleaning out vehicle after each shift
Other Requirements:
  • First aid and CPR certification desired
  • Driver's license and satisfactory driving record required
  • Criminal background (CORI) check required
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and lift up to 30 pounds.
