Job Description and Duties


Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, Supervising Cook I plans, organizes, supervises, and assists with the preparation, cooking, and serving of food to employees.

Oversight of the day to day operation of a seasonal bunkhouse/dormitory is the responsibility of the Supervising Cook I. Ensures that all safe practices rules and regulations (Cal-OSHA), Industrial Safety and Department of Health) are followed.

The position requires knowledge of Sanitation and Safety measures in kitchen operations; procedure and equipment used in the storage, care preparation, cooking and dispensing of food in large quantity; food handling sanitation; and the principles of effective supervision and instructing.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Supervising Cook I Exam.

For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.

Working Conditions

Positions located in Kirkwood/ Caples Lake.

While at the base of operation, the Supervisor Cook I will work in a climate-controlled facility under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with outside facilities, work in cold and heat extremes may be required. Employee will be required to work at high elevation. Rotating shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime will be required.


New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
