Job Title: Modeling Suites Software Developer

In the Applications, Simulations and Quality (ASQ) Division of the Computing Directorate, we have an opening for a Modeling Suites Software Developer. In this role, you will provide support to users and maintainers of the Modeling Suites, while also working on the development of software products and infrastructure relevant to the suites. This includes enhancing analysis pipelines, unit/regression testing, and creating common input/output software tools to streamline Verification and Validation processes and enhance problem portability across codes.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level based on the candidate's knowledge and relevant experience, as evaluated by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher SES.3 level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer computer science and software development support using industry-standard practices, modern programming languages, and operating systems.
  • Develop a variety of applications, including scientific, GUI, database, and visualization applications.
  • Participate in the entire software development lifecycle, from requirements definition to optimization.
  • Collaborate within an interdisciplinary team to support Modeling Suites.
  • Contribute to technical projects and organizational goals as an effective team member in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Engage with other developers to share knowledge, opinions, and recommendations.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities (SES.3 Level)

  • Manage multiple advanced tasks and prioritize effectively to meet deadlines while leveraging team members' skills.
  • Implement, deploy, and maintain software systems using advanced analysis, design, and programming techniques.
  • Offer solutions to complex problems requiring in-depth analysis of various factors.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with multi-physics code teams and users.
  • Proficiency in software development with Python.
  • Effective management of concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities to meet project deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience approaching challenging problems with enthusiasm and creativity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and the ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with diverse teams and document technical information.

Additional Qualifications (SES.3 Level)

  • Ability to work effectively with minimal guidance.
  • Advanced experience in providing innovative solutions and leveraging new technologies for complex tasks and projects.
  • Proficient in analytical thinking and problem-solving skills for moderately complex problems.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience in application development, configuration management tools (e.g., Git), test repositories, and commercial defect tracking systems like JIRA.
  • Familiarity with physics simulation code input/output and large-scale simulations on HPC.
