Job Responsibilities:

Program Development and Project Management

  • Design and deliver co-curricular programs that identify and respond to creating a sense of belonging and community building among the student body (e.g. heritage months and Gray Matter). These are executed under the oversight of Diversity Education and with administrative and functional support of the Center for Campus Life.
  • Assist Diversity Education team in implementation of diversity education programs for the campus community (e.g. Sophomore Diversity Retreat, What's Your Diversity and Breaking Bread)
  • Give particular attention to programs which improve the campus life experience for ALANA students by connecting them to existing resources or designing initiatives that address belonging, resilience, cultural wellness and community building (e.g. ALANA Student Welcome/Pre-Orientation Event, BBQ Beats with Alums).
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and execution of the annual divisional and university-wide signature events, Together RIT, Expressions of King's Legacy, Let Freedom Ring and Celebration of Excellence. This includes partnering with the Greater Rochester Community to encourage attendance by identifying high school partnerships and developing a database of VIP invitations. In addition, responsibilities will include organizing parking accommodations for community guest and planning special meet-n-greets.
  • Collaborates with DDI MARCOM to fully integrate Expressions of King's Legacy and Let Freedom Ring into the RIT community and help promote and assist in the marketing of the event both within RIT and in the Rochester Community.
  • Negotiate contracts, secure spaces, organize travel/lodging and other event logistics for guest speakers or performers as it relates to divisional and institutional diversity education signature events and programs (e.g. Expression of King's Legacy and Let Freedom Ring)
  • Develop, coordinate and inform divisional members of the yearly calendar of student-facing events, initiatives and activities.
  • Develop and implement appropriate methods and procedures to provide effective and successful social, cultural, and educational activities to address cultural belonging and wellness for students.
  • Actively coordinate heritage month programming partnerships with academic departments, identity centers and student organizations (e.g. College Activities Board, ALANA Collegiate Association, Black Awareness Coordinating Committee, Latin American Student Association, RIT Global Union and Asian Culture Society)
  • Maintains a presence in the MOSAIC Center to connect with students to understand their concerns and needs, provide mentoring, and research, develop, and create new (or revising current) co-curricular programs and events based on this in order to create and foster a sense of community belonging.
Evaluation and Assessment

  • Research and maintain up-to-date database for best practices for sense of belonging and community building for ALANA populations.
  • Assess student needs, priorities and concerns as it relates to diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Develop strategies to monitor, assess and enhance the effectiveness of existing and new initiatives.
  • Generate attendance and evaluation reports for projects, programs or initiatives that demonstrate new awareness and growth in sense of belonging and community building.
Administrative and Management

  • Responsible for overseeing operations of the MOSAIC Center and SAU Clark A, which includes: developing and implementing procedures and standards for use of the space (meeting spaces, central space, office space), ensuring proper usage and safety, managing and fostering relationships with stakeholders and creating opportunities for use of the space to create a sense of community and belonging.
  • Develop and present budget plans and resource allocations for events/programs to the Director of Diversity Education and/or Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion
  • Work with the divison's Director of Financial Services to develop and finalize contracts for speakers or performers
  • Hires, mentors, supervises, and evaluates performance of direct reports.
Identifies and provides opportunities for leadership and professional development of direct reports and others identified under this structure.

  • Supervise the Coordinator of Community and Belonging
Campus-Wide Committee and Outreach Efforts

  • Actively engage with other campus offices, departments or colleges to create, identify and implement sense of belonging, resilience, affirmation, cultural wellness and community building initiatives.
  • Lead and serve on divisional and institutional committees and working groups (e.g. Expressions of King's Legacy, Let Freedom Ring, heritage months, Together RIT, Celebration of Excellence).
  • Meet monthly with the MOSAIC Student Advisor Council
  • Ensure the success of the DDI Celebration of Excellence process and delivery that is coordinated by the Coordinator for Community and Belonging.
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional experience in Hospitality, Event Planning or Project Management
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in mid-to-large scale community event planning that include all aspects of the event.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated expertise in working with and on behalf of underrepresented communities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Adept at hospitality.
  • Experience managing different personalities and engaging across cultures.
  • Willingness to initiate and problem solve.
  • Able to develop and implement budgets for events & programs.
  • Demonstrated experience using social media to engage youth or traditional-aged college students.

The Division of Diversity and Inclusion (DDI) is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Director of Community & Belonging.


The position reports to the Executive Director for Culture and Diversity Education and meets regularly with the Vice President and Associate Provost for the Division of Diversity & Inclusion regarding university-wide initiatives.

The Assistant Director of Community & Belonging is responsible for:

  • Planning, executing and assessing ongoing and pop-up belonging, resilence, cultural wellness, and community building initiatives with a specific focus on ALANA (Asian, Latina/o/x/e, African, Native American) student populations.
  • Creating and assisting in the implementation of diversity education programs that engage the entire undergraduate student campus community (e.g. heritage months, and Breaking Bread 5-week dialogue program).
  • Serving as program lead coordinator for DDI university-wide Signature Events-Together RIT, Expresssions of King's Legacy, Let Freedom Ring and Celebration of Excellence.
  • Managing the daily operations of the MOSAIC Center and SAU Clark A and actively recruiting students to the space.
