Forest Health and Cooperative Programs GIS Specialist

This position serves as a staff specialist and has exclusive oversight of all GIS needs for the statewide Forest Health and Cooperative Programs within the Forest Resources Division (FRD) in support of implementing Michigan's Forest Action Plan.

The Forest Health and Cooperative Programs Section empowers natural resource professionals to successfully manage complex ecosystems utilizing best management practices and inspires people in urban and rural communities to manage, protect and enjoy Michigan's public and private forests.

This position provides complete oversite for numerous databases and GIS/map service integrations for the following programs:
Forest Health, Invasive Species, Urban and Community Forestry, and Forest Stewardship.

This position reports directly to the Resource Assessment Section manager and works cooperatively with the Forest Health and Cooperative Programs Section manager and program staff.

The Cooperative Programs GIS Specialist is responsible for working with other divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and a variety of partners in gathering, analyzing, and reporting spatial and tabular information.

This position works directly with Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas (CISMAs), research institutions, federal agencies such as the United States Forest Service, other state departments, non-profit organizations, and local units of government.

Position Description

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in a physical, biological, or natural resource science, resource management, resource planning, engineering or a related field.

Experience


Four years of professional experience in the protection, development and maintenance of land, water, or natural resources, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level in state service; or, one year equivalent to the senior (12) level in state service.
