Acoustics Modeling Support Engineer at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • We are looking for an Acoustics Modeling Support Engineer to join our Sensor Analysis and Data Modeling Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University.
  • ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging problems in support of the Navy, Department of Defense, and Intelligence communities' engineering and technology needs.
  • The ideal candidate will be part of a team of scientists and engineers focusing on next-generation sonar systems for various underwater applications.
  • Research areas include synthetic aperture sonar image formation, acoustic navigation techniques, acoustic remote sensing, and sonar image classification.
  • ARL is a DoD SkillBridge partner, welcoming transitioning military members.


You will:

  • Develop and integrate underwater acoustic models.
  • Analyze and collect sonar data from advanced sensors.
  • Collaborate with experts across multiple disciplines to devise solutions.
  • Work on cutting-edge sensors used by the laboratory and deployed in the Navy.
  • Customize workflow from hardware design to perception for information exploitation.


Additional responsibilities for higher-level positions:

  • Create and utilize high-performance computing.
  • Mentor employees and engage students in technical advancement.
  • Contribute to proposals, reports, and publications.
  • Encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.


Required skills/experience areas:

  • Algorithm development.
  • Strong mathematics background.
  • Exposure to data science.
  • Experience in acoustic propagation and/or scattering model development.
  • Ability to apply acoustic models to practical solutions.
  • Understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics.
  • Proficiency in Matlab or Python.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to present to professionals effectively.


Preferred skills/experience areas:

  • Knowledge of acoustics and signal processing.
  • Experience with C++ and CUDA libraries for parallel CPU or GPU programming.
  • Developing acoustic models for scattering and propagation.
  • Active government security clearance.


Location:

State College, PA (on-site position with occasional travel).


ARL at Penn State conducts research in defense science and technologies with a focus on naval missions.

Candidates must undergo a government security investigation and be U.S. citizens.

Pre-employment drug screening required.

SALARY:

The pay range for this position: $86,000 to $164,000 annually.
