Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this job is to plan, coordinate and implement Therapeutic Recreation programs for psychiatric inpatients, function as a member of the treatment team, maintain patient records, and participate in the training of Therapeutic Recreation interns.\r
This position will support the mission of the organization through active participation in clinical efforts to provide treatment in a recovery-oriented environment. The foundation of a recovery-oriented environment is respect and a commitment to safety in the least restrictive manner possible.\r

\r
Per the Amended Directive and Order Regarding Vaccination (MDH # issued by the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, effective April 18, 2023, staff in all hospitals and residential facilities operated by the Maryland Department of Health or any local health department are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Staff includes, but is not limited to, regular and contractual employees, contractual staff, volunteers, and other state employees performing any duties at the facility. An individual may request an accommodation by providing appropriate and sufficient documentation for bona fide medical or religious reasons.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a major in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college or university.\r

Experience:�One year of experience performing therapeutic recreation work in the treatment of mentally ill, aged, physically ill, or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients.\r
\r
\r

1. Current certification as a Therapeutic Recreator from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification may be substituted for the education requirements.\r
\r
\r
2. Experience as a professional therapeutic recreator, under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, licensed Physical Therapist or certified Activity Therapist, which included the responsibility for clients' assessments and the planning, implementation and evaluation of clients' recreation therapy treatment in a mental health or developmental disability setting may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis. Experience assisting in these responsibilities will not be accepted as qualifying experience.\r

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Physical Therapy classifications or Physical Therapist and Medical Specialists specialty codes in the therapeutic field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.\r

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r

2. Employees in some positions in this classification may be required to operate vehicles which require a specific motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.\r
\r
\r
4. Employees in this classification at facilities with a swimming pool may be required to obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment.\r
