Position Summary and Purpose

The Advanced Practice Provider is a skilled member of the health care team who is qualified by academic and clinical education to provide patient services as an allied health professional under the supervision of one or more physician supervisor(s) and in accordance with the medical staff bylaws of the hospital where the physician extender works. The Advanced Practice Provider will assist in the implementation of the health care plan and the management of patients by performing diagnostic and therapeutic tasks as defined and approved by the supervising physician(s).

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform and record history, physical examination, and discharge summary and present patient information to the attending physician.
  • Write routine orders and initiate requests for appropriate laboratory studies, X-rays, and consultations in accordance with approved standing orders, with such orders countersigned by a physician within the time limits outlined by the N.C. Medical and Nursing Boards.
  • Order IV drugs, blood products, and IV fluids.
  • Make hospital rounds and write progress notes for countersignature by the primary supervising physician.
  • Provide education and special instructions for the patient and the patient's family, including telephone follow-up post-discharge.
  • Work with other specialties, particularly in the oncology service line, to coordinate patient care regarding treatment plans or follow-up when needed.
  • Provide post-hospital instructions to patients related to wound and catheter care, diet, activity, and medications, including prescriptions for discharge medications as directed by the primary supervising physician.
  • Collect data and write pertinent progress notes on charts.
  • Make routine rounds and consult with other health professionals involved in the care of patients, to assess the patient's status and implement indicated therapy in conformance with routine post-op orders and service protocols.
  • Inform the physician of changes in the patient's status and initiate therapy as directed by the physician.
  • Collaborate with physicians on new outpatient and inpatient consultations, including reviewing health history, labs, imaging, notes, and contributing to plan of care.
  • Explaining cancer staging with patients, treatment plan, logistics, and side effects of RT. In addition, prepare documentation prior to consultation with HPI, assessment, and plan (known as "chart note").
  • See patients in the follow-up clinic and manage ongoing follow-up when needed, i.e., ordering follow-up imaging and labs.
  • Manage acute side effects of RT during and after RT.
  • Attend weekly tumor board meetings and monthly APP meetings.
  • Provide scheduled on-call coverage as assigned.
  • Evaluate and triage issues/concerns with patients under treatment on days when patients are not scheduled to see the physician.

Non-Essential Responsibilities:

  • For APPs with a designated work location in a single doctor site, additional responsibilities with remote coverage may apply
  • Coverage may be remote or on-site
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Additional inpatient services may be required

Competencies:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential patient information with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact well and communicate effectively with both patients and physicians
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills in the medical field

Education and Experience:

  • Must be a licensed PA or NP
  • Healthcare experience preferred
  • Oncology experience preferred

Physical Demands and WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Physical activity: Frequent reaching, stooping, pushing, pulling, and stretching. Medium to heavy lifting daily.
  • Physical requirements: Walking and standing for long periods of time.
  • Visual acuity requirements: Close visual acuity (e.g., viewing a computer terminal occasionally)
  • Exposure to infectious and/or contaminated body fluids.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials and contaminated waste.
  • May be exposed to high voltage power sources or electrical shock.
  • Where direct physician supervision is required, a SERO physician will be physically present within the Department of Radiation Oncology and will be immediately available to the APP for assistance
