Under the direction of the Director of Employment Services, the Employment Services Specialist works both 1:1 with clients and in group settings to provide job search, case management, and placement assistance to the Center's Trans Employment Program and LGBTQ Employment Services clients with multiple barriers to employment. The Center's Employment Services programs offer vocational case management, placement, and referrals services, as well as retention support to participants and community partners.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide 1:1 services for community members seeking employment with a focus on removing barriers to employment, life skills, job readiness, vocational counseling, job search, retention and/or referral to additional resources.
  • Conduct assessments and intakes for individuals seeking employment services to determine program eligibility, client needs, and referrals where appropriate.
  • Create an Individual Employment Plan (IEP) for enrolled clients and support clients in implementing the employment plan. Support clients in assessing educational and professional qualifications and/or transferable skills, identifying appropriate short and long-term employment objectives, mapping out strategies for reaching employment objectives, providing corresponding job development, and supporting the client throughout the job search, interviewing, and retention. Services may include vocational counseling, including case management, coaching on job search and career development, and resume development and interviewing skills.
  • Maintain knowledge of local resources available. Assess and refer clients to internal and external resources including group activities and workshops, life skill classes, and resource referrals as necessary, including mental health, medical, legal, crisis intervention, housing, transportation, and training.
  • Support group activities for job seekers. Coordinate and facilitate job search workshops and life skills classes tailored specifically for Trans/GNC/LGBTQ community members with multiple barriers to employment on a variety of topics including resume and cover letter writing, completing employment applications, interviewing techniques, networking, effective workplace communication, and pre-job fair tips.
  • Coordinate and conduct individual/group instruction through demonstration, lectures, guest speakers, cooperative learning activities, and other modalities of teaching, which address learning style differences and potential learning disabilities.
  • Support career fairs and other Employment Services events, including employer engagement events, drop-in groups, workshops, and other group programs.
Administrative functions:

Maintain client files for each 1:1 client: Develop written IEP, ensure enrollment forms are fully completed and accurate, document client contacts and/or attempted contacts, collect documentation of employment and retention, and evaluation/feedback forms. Ensure confidentiality for program participation and client files.
  • Support documentation of all group activities, including collecting sign-in sheets, feedback forms, curricula, and contact information for speakers and presenters.
  • Support other administrative functions of the Employment Services Program, as necessary and required, which may include data entry, shared minute-taking or meeting facilitation, and/or support with statistical and written narratives.
Other Activities:

Support strong partnerships with other Center teams/staff and collaborative agencies.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Employment Services team. Support Employment Services program activities, and general Center functions as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Cultural humility and demonstrated commitment to the transgender community; familiarity with the diversity of transgender, lesbian, gay, and bisexual identities/experiences required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in workforce development, employment services, community development, case management, or volunteer management with adults from various professional backgrounds.
  • Bilingual skills highly preferred. Fluency in English is required.
  • Detail-oriented, hardworking, and able to complete paperwork accurately & promptly.
  • Strong presentation skills, including networking and public speaking or group facilitation.
  • Understanding of local resources, local and state employment laws, and employment resources for the transgender communities.
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills, ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team-oriented organizational structure. Experience working collaboratively with multiple agencies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office or similar programs, understanding of concept of relational database, competent using the Internet, and excellent research abilities.
  • Innovative and entrepreneurial approach, including solution-oriented approaches to complex issues. Ability to adapt to changing environment and priorities.
  • Commitment to the mission of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center.
  • Strong commitment to racial, social, and economic justice, as evidenced by past/present work
  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse and fast-paced environment.
  • Requires flexibility in working some evenings and/or weekend hours.
COMPENSATION
  • $27.45/hour ($53,527 annually) including paid medical insurance as well as paid time off (vacation, health, & holidays)
  • Full-Time/Non-Exempt
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position is primarily office-based at the Center's 1800 Market Street location with an ability to negotiate a schedule of remote work up to a maximum of 40% time.
  • Hours are primarily Monday - Friday with occasional need for evening or weekend work. Work schedules are negotiable within a standard 8:00 am - 7:00 pm window.
  • Local travel may be required for meetings or offsite events. Out-of-town travel is infrequent and negotiable. No car is needed.
