As a Deputy Public Guardian, you will work with officials across many of Oregon's state agencies, counties, and local programs while providing professional services.

You will serve as a statutorily authorized, court-appointed public guardian for adults who have been judicially determined incapable of making decisions about their person, personal and/or financial affairs and are at significant risk for abuse, neglect, or self-neglect.


This essential work includes:

  • Direct provision of ongoing guardianship services to OPGC clients.
  • Investigate the need for guardianship.
  • Preparation of petitions and motions.
  • Provide guidance and recommendation on any necessary course of action.
  • Testify in proceedings.
  • Develop, coordinate, and refine public guardianship services.

The physical address lists the main office located in Salem, Oregon.

However, this role requires the successful candidate to be out stationed; working remotely while providing timely and professional service to the area being served.


Please note that this is a limited duration position that is currently funded through 12 months of temporary funding provided in the 2024 legislative session.

The intention of the Oregon Public Guardian is to secure permanent funding for this position during the 2025 legislative session prior to the expiration of the temporary funding; however, at this time funding can only be guaranteed for 12 months with funding set to end 06/30/2025.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a related degree; plus, four years' experience coordinating, administering, or working at an advanced level within a social service environment; OR,
  • A combination of experience or education equivalent to seven years of experience coordinating or administering a social service program or working at an advanced level within a social service environment.

Special Qualifications:

  • You are required to possess a valid driver's license issued by your state of residence.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon the successful applicant becoming a certified guardian by the Center for Guardianship Certification ( ) within six months of hire.

Desired Attributes:

  • Professional experience working with and providing advocacy for individuals experiencing cognitive deficits.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a challenging and varied caseload.
  • Professional experience maintaining confidentiality, and exercising excellent judgment, tact, discretion.
  • Ability to analyze information and utilize the findings to create reports, plans of action, and provide guidance to others.
  • Direct experience with the provision of guardian, fiduciary, or other substitute decision making services; or working within a guardianship/conservatorship program.
  • Demonstrated experience providing consultation or technical assistance efficiently to a variety of audiences with differing levels of understanding.
Preference may be given to applicants with any of the following:

  • A current and valid certification issued by the National Center for Guardianship Certification.
  • Experience working with and providing advocacy for individuals with diminished decision-making capacity.
  • Professional background and experience in finance, social services, or as a licensed Social Worker.

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect an additional 6.95%.
