The Academic Coach empowers students to develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college, thus promoting program outcomes of increased student retention, success, and completion. The Academic Coach is one who can generate excitement from potential students toward the many opportunities that Columbus State has to offer while building and maintaining positive relationships with students, families, instructors, college support staff, and community members. The Academic Coach will guide students through their educational career at Columbus State through support and encouragement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


Academic Coach, Student Support and Case Management

  • Provides direct academic coaching to an assigned caseload of thirty-five (35) students in STEM majors who are admitted to the TRIO SSS STEM program. May see other TRIO SSS STEM students on an as-needed basis.
  • Facilitates student learning strategies in traditional and online courses, in one-on-one and group sessions, both in-person and virtually. Maintains a thorough knowledge of multiple instructional methodologies to accommodate various student learning styles.
  • Helps students understand and use effective reading and learning strategies. Motivates students to take ownership of their academic success; empowers students to effectively communicate with faculty and student services and become better connected to resources and support services.
  • Supports students academically by identifying strengths and weaknesses and designing appropriate activities to improve their learning. Specific support areas can include improving time management, goal setting, forming productive habits, creating an organizational system, improving stress management, overcoming academic anxiety, and developing study skills.
  • Creates, facilitates, and presents workshops (virtually and in-person) for students and to assist faculty and staff and engage students in the learning process. May also assist with the creation of learning communities.
  • Researches and plans educational and cultural activities to encourage growth and exposure.
  • Advises students as they develop an individualized academic learning/study plan; helps students develop and apply learning and study skills for short-term and long-term academic success in person, via phone, email, and other delivery formats as needed. Responds to faculty-submitted and automatically generated alerts for an assigned caseload of students.
  • Partners with academic advisors and faculty colleagues to support individual student progress and needs, especially students needing additional college readiness support or those experiencing academic difficulty (warning, probation, and academic dismissal).
  • Assists students with registration, financial aid, and other college policies by explaining the paperwork, processes, and procedures to students. Shares resources available for students regarding academic, financial, and other individual needs.
  • Documents student interactions in appropriate college systems in an accurate and timely manner with the goal of continuous improvement. Accompanies students on academic tours, field trips, and meetings with other college departments to serve as a student advocate. Meets expectations set forth in the TRIO SSS (STEM) Grant regarding student outreach and engagement.

Data and Reporting

  • Provides reports and other analytics regarding student interactions, including attendance, academic progress, interventions, etc., to colleagues for evaluation purposes. Utilizes data to track activities, evaluate effectiveness, make recommendations for institutional and department changes, and improve ongoing, personalized support. Engages in ongoing program evaluation based on data and student feedback, focusing on learning outcomes.
  • Completes project reports, including updates on internal and external partnerships with ongoing data management to document student progress. Collaborates with direct supervisor and other Academic Coaches to prepare and present status reports to all levels of management.

Building Relationships and Partnerships

  • Develops and maintains excellent working relations with stakeholder partners, the community, students, and internal contacts as a department and the College representative. Collaborates on relevant projects as needed.
  • Fosters partnerships and collaborations with key STEM departments to keep the team up-to-date with student success and struggles. Works with key partners, including STEM faculty and advisors, to collaborate to engage students in STEM-related programming, research opportunities, and internships. Plans and delivers STEM-specific programming.
  • Helps identify and recruit students for the TRIO SSS programs by attending
  • college-sponsored resource fairs, welcome events, COLS courses, and other large events where students are gathered.

  • Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field
  • One (1) year of teaching, tutoring, and/or academic support experience in a college environment; can include work done in a graduate assistant role as professional experience

*An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.

Schedule: In-person: Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm.
