Job Summary: The Director of Veteran and Military Affairs oversees and administers all aspects of Veteran and Military Affairs (VMA). Ensures appropriate staff are hired and adequately trained, specifically in administering Veterans Administration Education Benefits. Identifies and integrates best practices from peer institutions to enhance services offered to the students in this population. Provides direct supervision for staff members and functional supervision over outside agency partners operating within the VMA office.
Additional Department Summary: Serves as a critical leader of the programs and support services that serve veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors at The University of Alabama. Leads the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs team to ensure The University of Alabama will continue to be the “University of Choice” for all student veterans, service members, dependents, and survivors by being recognized nationally as a Military and Veteran Friendly University. Ensures that appropriate staff are hired and adequately trained, specifically in administering Veterans Administration Education Benefits. Identifies and integrates best practices from peer institutions that will enhance services to the students served in this special population. Provides direct supervision for staff members as well as functional supervision over outside agency partners operating within the VMA office. Oversees and manages the UA/VA Veterans Health Care Clinic located on campus in Capital Hall. Communicates directly with the Director of the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center to ensure VA staff are appropriately servicing all eligible veterans on campus. Collaborates, cooperates, and communicates with university departments, administration, and community partners to enhance the services provided to student veterans, service members, and dependents. Ensures The University of Alabama is in compliance with all Federal Veterans Administration regulations and with the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding. Ensures that the Presidents' Keys to Success are adhered to for students using GI Bill benefits. Works directly with associated offices in an effort to maximize retention of students in this special population. Recruits efforts on military installations throughout the southeastern United States. Meets budgetary requirements and ensures adherence to all UA policies and guidance for the department. Completes required training related to UA policies/procedures and laws/regulations that create a more hospitable and respectful workplace and safer work environment. Holds staff accountable for completion of required training. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of veteran affairs experience; OR master's degree and six (6) years of veteran affairs experience. Must obtain clearance and be authorized by the Veterans Administration on a yearly basis to become and remain an active SCO (School Certifying Official).
Skills and Knowledge: Excellent communication skills. Knowledge and skills associated with departmental administration. Knowledge of Veterans Administration Educational policies and practices. Knowledge of Veterans Administration Healthcare standards of service for a VA Community Care Clinic. Knowledge of Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding. Knowledge of Presidential Orders pertaining to Veterans Education Benefits. Knowledge of VA Compliance Standards. Demonstrated commitment to expanding multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in integrating veteran services within a collegiate setting. Knowledge of student financial aid policies and procedures. Knowledge of student receivables policies and procedures. Knowledge of programs and service to ease the transition of servicemembers to college. Knowledge of UA degree requirements. Knowledge of UA admissions policies and procedures.
