Position OverviewThe Department of American Studies invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for part- to full-time lecturer positions. Lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Appointments are typically short in duration over a defined time period associated with the development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the course(s). Generally the appointments will be temporary.

Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in American Studies consistent with departmental instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.
Job Description100% - Regular Lecturer Duties:
Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.
  • Teach one to four, 1-3 hour courses as assigned by the Chairperson of the department.
  • Lecturers for AMS 100 or 110 may also assume responsibility for supervising GTAs.
  • Lecturers may assume limited advising duties and attend in-service meetings designed to improve teaching as determined by the Department Chairperson.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must notify the Chairperson and make arrangements for a substitute to teach class.
  • Classes should not be canceled.
  • Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours/week, one-two days a week.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
  • Adhere to departmental, College, and university policies.
Required QualificationsEvaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.
  1. Master’s degree in the discipline or related field for teaching undergraduate courses, or BA (or equivalent) and 5 years professional experience.
  2. PhD in the discipline or related field for teaching graduate courses, or MA (or equivalent) and 5 years professional experience, or 10 years professional experience.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of the American Studies course of interest.
  4. Demonstrated evidence of ability to teach the course.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Teaching experience at the university/college level or practical field experience.
  2. Evidence of prior success in teaching or in the field.
