Equitable Energy Transition Program Manager

Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill an Equitable Energy Transition Program Manager position at PPPL in the Science Education Department.

As the fusion energy field enters a stage of commercialization, the challenges are evolving from purely technical ones to ones that involve the social aspects of energy deployment, including market demands, environmental concerns, equitable energy deployment, social licensing/buy-in/acceptance, etc. At PPPL, the Science Education department has had a mission of public engagement and workforce development for the US plasma physics and fusion sciences/engineering community. While public engagement has been historically seen as an “outreach” mission, as the fusion field evolves towards one of commercialization, the definition of engagement with the public must be broadened to include the impact of fusion energy and plasma sciences on the public and the perception of fusion to the public.

The successful candidate will lead the department’s growing efforts to study and tackle the impact of fusion energy development and deployment, and plasma technology on the public. This will include working with other national labs, universities, and private companies, as well as identifying and partnering with non-profit groups, non-governmental organization (NGOs), community groups and other potential partners to further the mission of PPPL, including fusion energy development and deployment.

A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy — a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us

  • 20%: Identify and develop partnerships with groups and outside organizations to further study and advance the mission of an equitable energy transition, energy justice, as well as grow public acceptance of fusion energy and other PPPL scientific and technological missions.
  • 20%: Develop and deploy programs and initiatives with existing and new partners in the national lab system, universities, private companies and community partners, as well as international partners to support an equitable energy transition and an inclusive fusion energy ecosystem.
