Position Summary:

Job SummaryThe Environmental Education and Internship Director leads planning and coordination of Center for Environmental Education and Research (CEER) environmental education (EE) programs with external audiences, leads partnerships with watershed organizations in support of student internships, develops and coordinates the EE minor, and acts as a liaison to Admissions for recruitment in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. This position supports University and CEER strategic goals with a focus on student development, recruitment and retention, public awareness, and building a diverse and inclusive community. This position reports to the Director of the Freshwater Research Institute (FRI) and CEER Field Station. The position is defined as an exempt position under FLSA regulations.
Specific ResponsibilitiesExternal partners and programs:

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with external partners.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative outreach projects that incorporate undergraduate students as significant contributors.
  • Design and lead formal (K-12 classroom) programs with regional school districts.
  • Expand informal EE programs for all ages in collaboration with regional partner organizations.
  • Create and implement K-12 teacher professional development workshops aligned with Pennsylvania STEELS science standards.
  • Lead development and completion of joint projects with partners that elevate the position and visibility of the CEER.
  • Act as Susquehanna University’s liaison to the Vernal Schools Partnership.

Internships:
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations to support internship placements.
  • Coordinate academic year and summer internships for students.
  • Serve as primary contact for EE and internship opportunities related to CEER for both internal and external audiences.
Lead development of Environmental Education minor:
  • Teach up to 4 semester hours per academic year to fulfill minor requirements.
  • Coordinate and support EE teaching experiences for students in the minor.
Recruitment:
  • Actively recruit and support students, with an emphasis on populations historically underrepresented in the natural sciences and the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
  • Lead recruitment and retention initiatives for the Watershed Studies minor and related environmental programs in coordination with Admissions, showcasing the unique assets of the program and the CEER field station.
  • Promote the CEER to external audiences.
In support of University and CEER strategic goals:
  • In collaboration with the Director of the FRI/CEER Field Station, obtain external funding to support CEER operations and manage grant awards.
  • Support the continued growth of an inclusive and diverse campus community of faculty, staff, and students centered on the CEER.
Required Qualifications:

EducationA master’s degree in education or a related field is required.

ExperienceA progressive record of 5+ years of experience as an educator and leader in education best practices is required. Experience as a classroom teacher is required. Experience with informal outreach programs, a successful record of grant writing, and demonstrated success or evidence of potential to excel as an undergraduate teacher and mentor is preferred. Experience implementing new programs or in project management is required; experience in both is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Required knowledge includes a broad understanding of environmental science and specific knowledge of watershed science, contemporary field and lab methods, K-12 education standards and practices, and best practices in teacher professional development. Preferred knowledge includes best practices in supporting undergraduate student development and diverse student populations.
  • Excellent communication skills including interpersonal and online engagement, the ability to translate complex ideas for the layperson, writing, public speaking, and computing skills are required.
  • Required abilities include teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, developing programs for diverse audiences, building relationships with on- and off-campus partners, communicating with diverse audiences in verbal and written forms, developing and implementing short-term and long-term plans, problem-solving, collaboration, self-motivation and initiative, and simultaneously managing multiple priorities.

  • Position requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Position requires frequent manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to feel, handle, and reach.
  • Position requires frequent stooping, crouching, and bending.
  • Working conditions are both indoor and outdoor.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience
