General Summary of Position:

The Director of Student Rights & Responsibilities provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning for the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities. The Director is a thought leader on campus concerning the rights and responsibilities of students, and ensures that student behavior related policies, procedures and processes are informed by current legislation, case law and federal guidelines. In addition, the Director is responsible for monitoring and maintaining a fair, civil, and educational student conduct process. The Director will serve as an investigator for high level student conduct cases Title IX student-on-student cases, and is also appointed as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator. Education and personal development is the foundation from which the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities carries out its mission of caring for students, treating students equitably, and making ethical decisions.

The Director of Student Rights & Responsibilities is a member of the Dean of Student Affairs and Experiential Learning’s leadership team. They will work collaboratively with offices, departments, and the colleges across the university. Beyond leadership of the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities, the Director, along with the other Directors and Deans provides collaborative and seamless leadership of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.

The Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities oversees all aspects of the student conduct code and the student conduct process. Additionally, the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities coordinates Clery Act compliance efforts for the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, or related field.

Experience:

Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in student affairs with increased progressive responsibility. Minimum of 6 years of experience directly related to field of student conduct.Competency in the investigation of potential violations of the student conduct code and Title IX. Training by a recognized organization in these areas (e.g. ASCA, the Ghering Institute ATIXA, SUNY SCI, etc).Experience managing an electronic student conduct database, with preference to Maxient.Previous professional supervisory experience.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Working knowledge of compliance and legal issues as they pertain to Student Affairs (ex. Title IX, The Clery Act, FERPA, VAWA, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to create a vision and long-term goals for the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities
  • Specific training on Title IX Coordination, Investigations, and Case Adjudication.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with other departments especially Police Departments, Athletics and Residence Life.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Proficient in computer software programs including those in the Microsoft Office group, Adobe Acrobat, Maxient conduct software, and the University’s SIS system software.
  • Proven ability to promote a positive student culture.
  • Proven ability to work closely with to address and the needs of faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and the local community.
  • Clear understanding of professional human resource ethics and processes.

Additional Considerations:

Knowledge of FERPA, the ADAAA, VAWA, the Clery Act, and other applicable higher education law.Knowledge of applicable case law, and changes within the legal environment. Demonstrate integrity, initiative, dependability, openness, teamwork, a positive attitude, a commitment to the tenets of student development and creation of inclusive communities, as well as the values and mission of the University.
