Job Summary:
The Project SOAR Peer Mentors will assist in planningand delivering programming and providing outreach within SOAR. Mentors caneither be continuing Project SOAR participants in good academic standing orrecently graduated Project SOAR participants. The mentors will serve as rolemodels, campus resource experts, and trusted points of contact for TRIOstudents and staff. These individuals will possess the skills and knowledge toprovide support in academic, social, and personal areas as needed. In addition,these individuals will need to be able to work with a diverse group of studentsand be willing to participate in campus activities to help build relationshipsamong departments and to be able to encourage mentees to participate in campuswide events. Must commit to this role for one semester.

EssentialJob Functions:

  1.  Peer Mentors will report to the Project SOAR Counselor/Coordinator for job duties, with their schedules, etc.
  2. Maintain office hours.
  3. Contact logs will be turned into supervisor to show progress with students.
  4. Meet face-to-face with assigned peer mentees at least once a semester.
  5. Attend all SOAR main sponsored events (back to school kick off, orientation, holiday festival, awards banquet, in addition to workshops and other activates.).
  6. Attend at least 2 transfer, cultural, or campus events a semester with mentee(s).
  7. Initiate and maintain contact monthly with mentees/students.
  8. Notify mentees/students about all SOAR and campus events.
  9. Attend events with mentees/students.
  10. Maintain accurate paperwork for contact with mentees/students in the SOAR program.
  11. Attend Peer Mentor meetings.
  12. Notify supervisor about mentee progress and concerns.
  13. Other responsibilities assigned by the SOAR staff..
  14. Coordinate study sessions for students.
  15. Participant recruitment.
  16. Time and effort reports will be submitted monthly to the SOAR Director.
  17. Completes all mandatory training.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.

MinimumQualifications:

Education:

  • Must have a 2.00 GPA or higher.
  • Must be enrolled at least part-time (with exception of semester the student is expected to graduate or has graduated).

Work Experience:

  • Active or recentlygraduated Project SOAR student.

Knowledge,Skill, Abilities:

  • Responsible, independent and mature and has ability to motivate others.
  • Must be an individual who is honest, respectful, and has integrity.
  • Clear understanding of what it takes to be a successful college student.
  • Have a sincere desire to guide and support peers academically, professionally, and personally.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, fax machines, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to handle confidentiality agreements.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Self-starter.
  • Understanding of OSU-OKC campus resources.
  • Understanding of cultural diversity.
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.

PreferredQualifications:

  • Experience serving in a mentor capacity.
  • Experience in campus resources.
  • Campus or community involvement experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.
  • Work will be performed in an office environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone, via email, and various communication platforms.
  • Frequent local travel may be required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking and listening.
  • Duties require extensive use of computers, telephone and other office equipment.
  • Requires possible lifting of up to 25 lbs. (If an object weights more than 45 lbs., OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift).
