Summary: The Director, Volunteer Leadership Strategy will imagine, develop, implement and evaluate a consistent volunteer experience across board and council leadership opportunities. The Director will proactively collaborate with colleagues to ensure that University messages are conveyed to volunteer leaders. Oversees the board/council volunteer pipeline in partnership with the Development Office and develops stewardship and engagement plans for volunteer cohorts. Works with teams to plan and execute Board and Council meetings.Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • In partnership with Board/Council managers, creates consistent volunteer onboarding experiences and evaluates volunteer intent at the end of each term; creates, executes, and manages stewardship and engagement strategies by cohort.
  • Develops and manages a Board Member Emeritus program.
  • Creates, documents, and maintains volunteer experience guide for Wake Communities leadership group; in partnership with development colleagues, develops strategies to steward and cultivate volunteers.
  • Champions singular, common registration system for Board and Council meetings; serves as a liaison between Technology team and Board/Council coordinators to mitigate issues.
  • Partners with appropriate colleagues to develop and convey messaging and requests time from senior leaders for Board/Council meetings.
  • Collaborates with campus partners, including facilities, parking management, Aramark, Budd Group, etc. to create efficiencies in meeting execution.
  • Manages volunteer pipeline in partnership with the Development Office.
  • Creates, documents, and maintains processes to ensure communications, meetings and experiences are consistent among various Boards and Councils.
  • Leads regular meetings with Board/Council leaders to discuss volunteer pipeline and identifies potential new Board/Council members.
  • Helps in onboarding new Board/Council managers and development coordinators.
  • Ensures Board/Council rosters are updated regularly in DAD; partners with Reporting team to ensure “Board/Council” parameter pulls expected data.
  • Develops guidelines about what constitutes a board, council, committee, taskforce, etc. and the function and lifespan of each; documents the process by which each would be approved and the degree of support it would receive from UA.
  • Understands the interests and needs of particular Boards/Councils and designs programs and experiences to suit.
  • Maintains knowledge of institutional fundraising priorities.
  • Tracks stewardship activities, gifts, events and contacts in DAD.
  • Works with Coordinator to plan and execute Board and Council meetings in partnership with Development Coordinators. Director is responsible for ensuring that Board and Council meetings are in keeping with our overarching experiential expectations.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree with six to eight years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to devise and support thoughtfully orchestrated experiences and programs to steward and cultivate donors.
  • Considerable experience in volunteer management.
  • Expertise in organizing, planning, and executing complex experiences in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently; able to execute existing projects while managing and responding to urgent opportunities.
  • Nimble in the face of changing priorities and circumstances.
  • Self-starter; entrepreneurial and creative in formulating and executing ideas, opportunities, and strategies. Ability to think independently and anticipate next steps.
  • Ability to learn and work inside of project management systems.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills.
  • Service-oriented; delights in providing remarkable, memorable customer-service designed to strengthen relationships.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with colleagues and partners.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality pertaining to information contained in donor records and system data.

  • Ability to answer complex questions. Proactively seeks additional information to perform assigned duties.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google products, as well the ability to learn and use Advancement systems (DAD, Advisor, OnBase, etc.)

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Previous experience in Board/Council/volunteer management preferred.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work.
  • Supervises Volunteer Leadership Coordinator.
  • May supervise student employee(s).

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

Sedentary work primarily involving sitting/standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another. Medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds. No adverse environmental conditions expected.
