Additional Information:We are seeking a Researcher interested in ocular biology to join the laboratory of Dr. Krish Kizhatil in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at The Ohio State University. We study glaucoma, a common ocular disease involving harmfully high intraocular pressure (IOP; pressure inside eye) and neural degeneration in the optic nerve and retina. Our goal is to find cures for glaucoma. Our strong interests include finding the molecules and mechanisms controlling normal intraocular pressure, the impact of age on these mechanisms. This includes molecular mechanisms controlling developmental and adult biology of structures controlling IOP the Schlemm’s canal and trabecular meshwork including mechanism by which neural control of IOP is accomplished including mechanotransduction and other cellular signaling pathways. In addition, new research will be initiated into finding resiliency factor to prevent neurodegeneration of the retinal ganglion cells. We are also interested in the role of transcription factors and other mutations in both ocular development and adult disease. We use an array of mouse models, genetic, viral, and physiologic approaches. The Kizhatil lab has also established collaborators at Columbian University, Duke University and Imperial College of London who are leaders in the field. We eventually hope to collaborate with physicians to translate our finding to the clinic.
