Trinity Christian College seeks a part-time Director of Chapel Worship.  Reporting to the Campus Pastor, the Director of Chapel Worship supports the spiritual life of the College by leading the chapel program. In particular, we seek a “pastoral musician” who can collaborate at a high level with students, faculty, and staff across departments to lead spiritually formative, Christ-centered services of worship and to champion a campus-wide culture of Christian spiritual formation. This position is a part-time (20 hours/week), 10-month (August–May) contract.

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leads in planning, coordinating, and executing the College’s twice-weekly, voluntary chapel program (with musical platform leadership expected every worship service, but at least once per week), facilitating rehearsals and services that represent Trinity’s interdenominational and intercultural community while reflecting an ecumenically Reformed spirit.
  • Leads weekly chapel planning meetings with student Chapel Interns.
  • Recruits, develops, and mentors student musicians, liturgists, and worship leaders.
  • Supervises student workers for chapel support.
  • Supervises student leaders for Outcry, the weekly student-led worship service.
  • Assists with preparation for regular celebrations of Communion in chapel.
  • Oversees chapel equipment, media, and technology, working closely with the Event Services and Audio-Visual departments.
  • Collaborates with the Music Department faculty to incorporate student choral ensembles (Concert Choir, Honors Ensemble, Gospel Choir) into chapel worship.
  • Collaborates with relevant departments to maintain intercultural and interdenominational representation within the chapel program.
  • Plans and leads worship for special services and College ceremonies, such as Blueprints Praise, Student Leader Commissioning Service, Convocation, and Baccalaureate.
  • With the Campus Pastor, shares leadership for monthly Campus Ministries student leadership team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other qualifications include:

  • Christian faith consistent with the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, with active participation in a church that affirms these creeds. Familiarity with the confessional Reformed tradition.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master of Divinity, Master of Music, or related theological master’s degree strongly preferred, or a combination of bachelor’s degree and significant ministry experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in collaborative worship planning and leading in a congregational setting.
  • Competence and confidence in leading musical worship both vocally and instrumentally (guitar and/or piano).
  • Ability to select worship songs based on factors beyond musicality alone, including congregational singability, theological integrity, and liturgical suitability.
  • Ability to audition, schedule, and lead teams of students and staff members from a convergence of Protestant liturgical traditions (North American contemporary evangelical song, continental hymn tradition, Black gospel tradition, non-English song, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of music theory and its applications to contemporary worship.
  • Functional knowledge of Reformed, evangelical, and global liturgical expressions, and ability to negotiate various theologies of contemporary worship.
  • Awareness of and responsiveness to current issues and trends in contemporary and evangelical worship.
  • Fluency in industry tools for worship planning and production (Planning Center, ProPresenter, CCLI, Sibelius or Finale).
  • Ability to navigate winsomely competing theologies of contemporary issues encountered in campus ministry and chapel worship, such as women in ministry leadership, sacraments/ordinances, and human sexuality.
  • Previous experience recruiting, training, and mentoring college-aged musicians preferred.
  • Previous experience in higher education and/or student development preferred.
  • Ordination or ecclesial licensure preferred but not required. For candidates who are ordained for recognized ministry work at the College, appointment at the title of Assistant Pastor is negotiable.
