Job Description Summary:

Position Summary
Under general supervision, respond to routine and complex electrical-related service calls.

Responsibilities:

Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections and corrective maintenance activities to the university’s electrical parts, equipment and devices.

Required Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma with a minimum of five year related experience.
  • Current working knowledge of electrical systems including planning additions or modifications on secondary circuits.
  • Proven ability to read and understand electrical blueprints, specifications and schematic diagrams.
  • Proven ability to use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace and test electrical circuits, equipment and appliances.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and repair electrical controls and programmable logic controllers.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to install and maintain motors, welding equipment, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers and transformers.
  • Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of general trade methods, materials, tools and equipment.
  • Technical skills to learn and use computerized databases and systems needed for the position.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize own work requests and load and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Analytical skills to identify and resolve systems and/or mechanical problems.
  • Familiarity with city and state building codes, OSHA rules and regulations, standard safety practices and equipment and other requirements for workplace safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to safe working practices as defined by industry and regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply safe driving practices as defined by California DMV
  • Ability to work in a variety of physical environments including on ladders, man-lifts etc. with heights of up to 30 feet.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English in order to communicate with all levels of campus community and business contacts.
  • Ability to understand and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere.
Desired Qualifications:

  • Completion of a four-year apprenticeship program.
  • Respond to routine and complex electrical-related service calls, and perform scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, and corrective maintenance activities to the university’s electrical parts, equipment, and devices.
  • Install and monitor the performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, adjustments, or replacement.
  • Repair, install, replace, and test electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances using appropriate tools and testing instruments.
  • Operate and maintain high voltage switchgear and controls; repair and maintain motor control centers and programmable logic controls.
  • Troubleshoot and repair primary distribution system malfunctions such as ground fault tracing and cable replacement.
  • Plan electrical secondary system additions or modifications.
  • Monitor hardware inventory to ensure adequate supply. Research and estimate materials required for specific job components. Work with tool crib and Department Business Manager to stock hardware.
  • Read, employ, and update electrical panel schedules and building or system blueprints.
  • Complete and maintain all necessary paperwork and records as required by the department.
  • Maintain clean job site throughout duration and clean up job site following work completion. Maintain safe working conditions for self and others. Ensure proper storage of supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Work with external contractors to provide support and may assist with inspections of finished jobs.
  • Ensure all jobs comply with university policy and state, local, and federal laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
  • Participating in the annual residence hall turnover activities. Assist other trades during specific peak workloads or emergencies. Provide guidance and training to lower-level electricians.
