The College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Office for Research and Graduate Education is seeking an experienced and highly qualified candidate for the position of Grants and Contracts Management Consultant. This role will be responsible for overseeing and managing post-award activities for a diverse portfolio of complex, large-scale, and multi-disciplinary awards. As part of the CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education, the specialist will ensure the effective administration of assigned awards from initiation through close-out.
Key Responsibilities:
- Directs, manages and administers sponsored research for extraordinarily complex projects of large scope; provide solutions which may set precedent. Projects have significant and long-term impact.
- Understand and document sponsor requirements, including budgets, reporting, deliverables, and timelines.
- Verify accuracy of awarded budgets in Workday and the set-up of sub awards, cost-sharing or matching funds, and program income as applicable.
- Act as the primary liaison between faculty, staff, the College, and the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP).
- Provides post award guidance and support to Sponsored Program Officers for complex transactions and troubleshooting unique and problematic situations.
- Oversee and manage project budgets, cost-share, release time commitments, personnel appointments, costing allocations, and effort certification.
- Provide real-time grant status reports and updates as needed.
- Ensure compliance with the funding agencies terms and conditions, university policies, procedures, and best practices in collaboration with departmental and university staff.
- Conveys difficult, complex or sensitive information, facilitates productive dialogue on sensitive matters.
- Address and escalate issues from stakeholders as necessary.
- Respond to sponsor requests in coordination with OSP.
- Collaborate with PIs and OSP on subcontract initiation and monitoring, consultant agreements, and no-cost extensions.
- Oversee award close-outs, ensuring that grant awards are finalized according to sponsor terms.
- Represent the College at external grant and committee meetings when required.
- Train and mentor new research administrators and staff on grants management best practices.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on complex sponsor mechanisms.
- Provides pre-award support as needed.
- Address other strategic priorities as they arise.
Minimum Education Requirement:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; master’s degree preferred.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- At least 6 years of experience in research administration, including grant or contract management.
- Strong knowledge of pre- and post-award grant management processes, with working knowledge of Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
- Excellent time management, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently and within a team in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to interpret legal agreements and policies.
- Strong customer service orientation and advanced financial analysis and budgeting skills using Excel.
Desired Qualifications:
- 8–12 years of experience in research administration, including grant and/or contract management.
- Familiarity with Workday financial and HR systems, and experience with electronic research administration tools.
- Certified Research Administration (CRA) certificate.
- Experience working with the OSU Office of Sponsored Programs.
- Knowledge of university policies, rules, and regulations.
Location:
This position can be based on either the Columbus or Wooster campus, with remote hybrid options available. Occasional travel for in-person meetings is required.
