The Neurosciences Clinical Trials Unit (NCTU) supports over 70 active Industry, Federal funded, and investigator-initiated studies at any given time. Current trials include those for epilepsy, memory and cognitive disorders, neurocritical care, neuromuscular disorders, stroke, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, pediatric neurology, and neurosurgical spine.
The NCTU model strengthens research support by providing highly trained research coordinators who collaborate with investigators and sponsors with the goal of conducting clinical trials efficiently and with the highest standards. The NCTU team provides our experienced investigators with primary coordinators, back-up coordinators, and administrative support to assist with regulatory compliance, budgetary and financial oversight, as well as quality management.
The NCTU is managing a complex mix of trials among multiple departments, including Neurology, Neurosurgery and ENT. Due to the increased research endeavors of new and current faculty, the Clinical Research Manager/Budgeting Officer serves in a leadership position within the NCTU, providing administrative and financial oversight while assisting NCTU Leadership with all aspects of NCTU research management.
This position manages and evaluates the social/clinical research associated with the Neurosciences Clinical Trials Unit, a division within the Department of Neurology. The work performed is to support the expanding research programs and policies. The range of duties include but are not limited to: project planning and design, project budget and financial management, data/information collection and analysis, project administration and oversight, program and/or policy development and evaluation (develop and maintain financial SOPs), and preparing reports. Work will also include the managing of the unit's research study finances for studies involving human subjects. Financial monitoring is an integral component of clinical trial success, providing fiscal guidance and assisting NCTU Leadership with all aspects of research fiscal management. This position will represent the NCTU Leadership regarding research fiscal business at department and University level when appropriate. Work will also include training of staff and faculty.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Minimum of 3 years' experience in research coordination or management and experience in budget negotiation. Must have demonstrated experience in research activities, developed understanding of contract and budget negotiation.
In addition, the candidate must be able to:
- Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of research, regulatory compliance (FDA, ICH, GCP) and ability to understand a clinical protocol and research contract.-Experience in creating administrative tools, developing, and implementing new processes, and drafting standard operating procedures.
- Communicate effectively, efficiently, and diplomatically, both orally and in writing.
- Work independently and to multitask in a fast-paced environment, prioritize high-volume work-load with minimal supervision.
- Critical thinking skills for problem solving with strategic thinking capacity to drive the research studies while understanding the upstream and downstream implications of decisions that affect study timelines.
- Plan work to meet established deadlines.
- Adaptable/flexible, independent critical thinker, able to adjust to challenges with confidence and professionalism.
Preferred candidates will have a minimum of 7 years of experience in research coordination or management and at least 2 years of experience in budget negotiation. Knowledge and appreciation of University structure, practices, policies and procedures. UNC experience preferred.
