Rhodes College seeks an experienced, strategic, and forward-looking leader for the position of Vice President for Inclusive Excellence. Reporting to the President, the VP will partner with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to design and implement a holistic vision to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at Rhodes that will inform both high-level strategy and day-to-day operations. Drawing upon a nuanced understanding of national best practices and deep experience working with student, faculty, and staff populations, the VP will lead the way in crafting policies, guidelines, and programs that are proactive, transparent, and thoughtfully tailored to Rhodes’ mission and needs.

Job duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Create and implement a forward-looking strategic framework for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), aligning with the College’s overarching strategic plan. If possible, work with faculty, staff and student groups to develop a holistic vision to position the College as a leader in sustainability and environmental justice.

  • Evaluate and align College policies and practices with nationally recognized best practices. Identify strengths and areas for growth, transforming operations into a model of excellence tailored to the College's mission.

  • Lead initiatives to foster an inclusive campus community. Develop programming, training, and educational opportunities to promote civil dialogue and collaboration across diverse groups. Support enrollment efforts to attract and retain a diverse student body.

  • Strengthen and expand the College’s relationship with the City of Memphis. Develop partnerships addressing environmental justice and civic engagement, positioning the College as a national model for service learning in an urban setting.

  • Mentor and support faculty and staff, promoting professional development and fostering a collaborative, inclusive work culture. Contribute to diverse hiring practices and ensure underrepresented students see shared experiences in faculty and staff.

  • Partner with the Provost and Academic Affairs to support student success inside and outside the classroom. Assist with refining the First Year Experience course and help recruit, support and retain a diverse faculty.

  • Enhance data collection and analysis related to campus climate, retention, and satisfaction. Use data to inform decisions and optimize student, faculty, and staff experiences and resource allocation.

Job Qualification Requirements:

  • Master’s degree required, PhD preferred, with a focus on fields related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB)

  • Five years of leadership experience in DEIB initiatives required; knowledge of sustainability and environmental justice preferred.

  • Sophisticated understanding of the climate and fiscal challenges facing liberal arts colleges, along with an understanding of effective strategies to address them.

  • Proven ability to lead through significant institutional change, encompassing strategic mission and operational assessments.

  • Skilled in facilitating complex and sensitive discussions related to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and other identity-based topics with diplomacy and emotional intelligence.

  • Commitment to accessibility and visibility with students, actively listening to their needs, advocating for their priorities, and supporting their aspirations.

  • Ability to partner effectively with faculty and staff in fostering a holistic learning environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trust and shared purpose with diverse stakeholders, including parents, alumni, trustees, city leaders, and the local community.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly in public speaking.

  • Understanding of collaborative leadership structures in higher education, the academic enterprise, and a commitment to the mission and vision of Rhodes College.
