Minneapolis, United States StarTribune Full time
Description

The Star Tribune is the Upper Midwest's largest news organization, with audience numbers consistently in the top five in the country amongst regional and national peers. Building on an extraordinary legacy that includes seven Pulitzer Prizes and hundreds of other awards, the Star Tribune is an unrivaled force for journalistic excellence in Minnesota. It is also a company under transformation - realigning its core purpose for a new age of media consumption through innovative new partnerships, technology strategies, and a refreshed strategic direction. Our company has a new vision to create the leading model for local news in America - driving innovation in media to make every Minnesotan's life better. We're looking for dynamic leaders to help create that model. We're excited to work with people who care about journalism and democracy and are eager to re-invent one of our state's most trusted companies for a completely new era of growth that embraces new technologies and strategies for excellence.

Job Summary:

As an engineer focused on news innovation, you will play a pivotal role in transforming how we gather, produce, and deliver news, with a specific emphasis on AI and related technologies.

You will join a small team within the product and engineering department, embedded in the newsroom. Day-to-day, you will collaborate closely with journalists, product managers, and our growing data and analytics team to design and build products that enhance our reporting capabilities and audience engagement.

Although AI isn't the only technology this team will focus on, a major part of your work will be on helping the newsroom - and the entire organization - leverage the enormous potential of generative AI and related technologies. The Star Tribune aims to empower our journalists to utilize these technologies to enhance our ability to gather, process, and disseminate news. Our goal is to augment and enhance - not replace - the incredible work our journalists do.

The Star Tribune is deeply committed to supporting local news and the local news ecosystem in Minnesota and we believe in sharing our knowledge and innovations with the industry. Therefore, an important part of your role will be to share your developments and insights with the broader news community.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop tools and systems to improve our ability to gather, process, and disseminate news
  • Work with technologists, designers, journalists and product managers to develop new products and features
  • Work with the broader product and engineering teams to integrate these new products into our core platform
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements in AI and machine learning techniques relevant to journalism and news media
  • Advocate and mentor on the topics of LLM technologies in the newsroom and the wider Star Tribune technical staff

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Proven background developing AI/LLM applications, preferably in a media or journalism context
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R and JavaScript
  • Solid understanding of natural language processing (NLP) techniques and tools
  • Experience working with and fine-tuning large language models
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) for deploying scalable AI solutions
  • Experience working with Vector databases in the development of LLM applications
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a passion for applying AI to real-world challenges in news reporting
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of media ethics and understanding of journalistic principles, particularly as they relate to technologies like generative AI
  • Previous contributions to open-source projects or publications is preferred
