Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a nimble, resourceful and high metabolism journalist to join the local desk as a breaking news reporter. This is a wide-ranging assignment with the dual mission of keeping The Post out front on major local news developments while also chronicling the dynamic culture and daily life of the Washington region.

The successful candidate has a sharp instinct for topics driving the conversation locally and the ability to quickly land well-executed stories that engage and delight readers. We are looking for someone with excellent news judgment who can move fast and stay out front on significant news. Most of all, they should be endlessly curious and excited to explore the characters, quirks and tensions that illuminate the vibrant, diverse communities in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Responsibilities:

Identifying and producing stories that capture the most intriguing dynamics of the D.C. region, and the people, institutions, officials and policies behind them.Responding swiftly to breaking news with live coverage and sustained, strong reporting.Reporting across a range of subjects with the highest level of rigor and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.Working in collaboration with reporters across the local desk and newsroom, including data and visual journalists.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience covering breaking news in high-pressure situations.A track record of landing engaging quick-turn enterprise pieces.An eye for quirky and surprising stories.Enthusiasm for new conceptual approaches to stories.A collaborative mindset and eagerness to experiment with a variety of story forms.A quick metabolism and competitive drive.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
