The Department of Chemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of the MSACST (Masters of Science in Applied Chemical Science and Technology) Program.

Position Purpose:

The Director of the Masters of Science in Applied Chemical Science and Technology, a fee-based program, is responsible for its administrative leadership and management.  In this full-time position, the MSACST Director implements the direction of the program in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, as well as managing the growth of the program, student success, and relationships with industry and academic partners.

Position Complexities:

The Director of the MSACST program in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Washington involves overseeing students and curricula, growth of industry internships, and implementation of capstone projects.  Under the direct supervision of the Department Administrator, and working closely with the Chair and faculty leadership, they will plan, develop, and implement program curriculum, along with providing oversight of student capstone and research project outcomes.  In coordination with the Department Administrator, they will manage budgets, marketing, events, and coordinate alumni engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• 10% - Admissions – Manage graduate application system, work with faculty leadership in application reviews, offers, and onboarding of academic cohorts.

• 15% - Programmatic growth – Actively promote programs, work with faculty leadership on management of capstone projects and research success.

• 15% - Develop and implement industry internships for students, and management of any required MOUs, and with the Administrator oversee any research outcome/IP related contracts.

• 15% - Develop and refine program curriculum, learning outcomes, and course offerings in consultation with Chair and faculty leadership.

• 15% - Advising – Provide guidance and support to students throughout their academic journey, including orientation, course selection, academic planning, and career development.Address student concerns, inquiries, and grievances in a timely and professional manner.

• 15% - Retention and Progression – Monitor student progress, academic performance, and graduation requirements, implementing interventions and support services as needed to ensure student success and retention.

• 5% - Policy Coordination – Manage course webpages, ensure availability of relevant information, and policies pertaining to operation of the program.

• 5% - Budgeting – Prepare and manage the MSACST budget in conjunction with Administrator and Continuum College management, allocating resources effectively to support academic activities, faculty compensation, and program enhancements.  Identify funding opportunities, grants, and sponsorships to support program initiatives, research projects, and student scholarships. Work closely with departmental leadership and administrative staff to ensure efficient utilization of facilities, technology, and other resources to meet program needs.

• 5% - Marketing and recruitment – Co-develop and implement marketing strategies to attract prospective students and increase program enrollment, leveraging various channels such as digital media, events, and partnerships. Represent the program at conferences, workshops, and industry events to raise its profile, build networks, and cultivate partnerships with employers, alumni, and professional organizations. Collaborate with the Department’s/University’s marketing and communications team to produce promotional materials, website content, and informational resources that highlight the program's strengths and value proposition.

Minimum Requirements:

• M.S. in a relevant STEM field with 5+ years’ experience;

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional Requirements:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills;

• Demonstrated ability to advise and manage student success;

• Strong leadership and demonstrated ability to communicate between colleagues with a variety of cultural backgrounds in a respectful and diplomatic manner;

• Self-starter with demonstrated skills for solving problems independently;

• Strong organizational, electronic file management, and computer skills including Microsoft Office suite of services, and management of digital workload in a paperless environment.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in a relevant STEM field;

• Expertise in curriculum design/management;

• Experience working with industry partners;

• Experience managing program budgets;

• Experience in student advising and support services;

• Knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies related to Applied Chemical Sciences.

Conditions of Employment

May require occasional work outside of normal working hours to meet specific deadlines or for events.
