Duties

The Assistant Director, (Education & Experience) is responsible for the planning, direction and supervision of NMAI's Education unit's activities, operations and projects for all phases to include conception, development and implementation and ensures projects are complete within scope, schedule and budget.

In this position, you will:
Manage and oversee the Education unit's activities and operations, conduct research, plan, develop, implement and evaluate educational resources, programs and projects for diverse local and national audiences, including students and teachers in accordance with appropriate laws, Treaty, Executive Order, Federal and SI regulations and the Strategic plan.

Develop short- and long-term project plans to determine goals, objectives and strategies, establishes priorities, delegates the work, coordinates, and integrates project activities, performs continual analysis and evaluation of education project development, management and operation.

Serve as a critical liaison on Smithsonian committees for pan institutional initiatives and or committees related to teacher training, student services and development of professional curriculum materials; serves as a critical liaison to K-12 schools, the US Department of Education, educations standards writing bodies, and policy makers.

Supervise the Education unit. Directs the work through subordinate supervisors; ensures consistency of performance evaluation criteria among subordinate units; and oversees and develops annual personnel staffing plans, spending, and training plans and works with staff in monitoring and developing individual performance plans.

You must meet these Basic Education Requirements:

Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

or

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

In addition to the Basic Requirements above you must have the following:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as supervising education staff in a museum or cultural institutional setting and utilizing museum education theories and knowledge of teaching techniques to develop museum programming for diverse audiences.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
