Pneumococcal Vaccines Global Medical Affairs Lead, MD

San Francisco, United States Pfizer Full time

ROLE SUMMARY

This position will assume a senior role within the MDSCA pneumococcal vaccines asset, supervising a team of pneumococcal vaccine medical affairs experts within the Global Respiratory Vaccines Franchise. This team supports medical affairs activities globally, within the global pneumococcal asset for the current (PCV13 and PCV20) and next generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PNG) for both pediatric and adult use. The position is responsible for the development and implementation of a single, aligned global medical position on scientific and medical issues relevant for pneumococcal vaccines and to integrate these data into Medical Affairs outputs. This will be achieved by integration with different functional areas within the pneumococcal vaccines franchise (vaccine research and development, health outcomes, commercial, regulatory, safety, public affairs) at the global and local levels, and coordinating work and strategies where appropriate with KOLs and external scientists. The Medical Affairs team also ensures medical input into critical documents such as regulatory filings and communications, press releases, and internal position statements. The Medical Affairs team also leads studies and publishes manuscripts, generally summary statements and systematic literature reviews (the latter usually conducted by CROs). Depending on interest, skills and time, this position could also participate on and contribute to studies led by the Scientific Affairs team.

As a supervisory position, the incumbent must have demonstrated strong leadership skills; the ability to work within teams across numerous cross-functional areas; ability to work efficiently and effectively on highly complex subjects delivering high quality products on time; extensive network of KOLs; and expertise in critical areas. Specific expertise will include pneumococcal epidemiology; pneumococcal vaccine science; understanding the implementation and biases of field based/observational studies; regulatory issues and filings; vaccine safety; and real world data analyses. Ideally the incumbent will have expertise in designing and implementing field-based/surveillance/observational studies to allow an understanding of their limitations and biases when interpreting results of internal and external studies. Given the cross-functional and outward facing nature of this position, the incumbent must have demonstrated extensive positive feedback from colleagues and external collaborators.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise a team of Global Pneumococcal Vaccine Medical Affairs experts, including setting priorities, overseeing work, meeting on a regular basis, assessing and communicating performance, and assigning some parts of compensation (e.g., bonus levels).

  • Ensuring integration of scientific information (epidemiology, carriage, disease burden, public health value, etc.) and summarize scientific evidence for Medical Affairs deliverables, in conjunction with pediatric/adult leads

  • Contribute to and lead strategy and execution of publications, scientific congresses, including symposia, and advisory boards related to pneumococcal vaccines

  • Provide global medical affairs support for regulatory deliverables across pediatric and adult franchises and for existing, in-line, and early phase pneumococcal vaccines.

  • Develop and update slide compendiums for medical-to-medical communication as well as for internal use on key evidence related to pneumococcal disease and vaccination

  • Lead and contribute to scientific manuscripts on pneumococcal disease and vaccination

  • Where appropriate, integrate into and contribute to ongoing Pfizer studies led by Scientific Affairs staff

  • Gather and integrate published scientific data necessary for developing pneumococcal vaccine product labels

  • Participate in the scientific dialogue and positioning of pneumococcal vaccines and pneumococcal science via various avenues, including but not limited to:

  • The development and execution of medical advisory boards in accordance with Pfizer policies and procedures

  • Working with internal and external experts to publish data in peer-reviewed manuscripts,

  • Working with internal and external experts to develop abstracts and present data for scientific congresses

  • Participate in cross-functional collaborations to support adult and pediatric launches globally

  • Attend and contribute to Respiratory Vaccine Franchise Leadership Team meetings

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

  • MD required and 5+ years of experience (time during a doctoral program in a relevant subject area would count towards this time)

  • Preference is for experience in vaccine-related or vaccine-preventable disease related medical/scientific activities

  • Expertise in critical areas such as epidemiology, field based studies and their interpretation, pneumococcal and pneumococcal vaccine science, writing and publishing manuscripts, and regulatory strategies and science

  • Established track record of values and compliance leadership including across diverse cultures and geographies

  • While not a requirement, previous supervisory experience will be a plus; regardless, the position requires someone with commitment to and ability for supervising and leading a team.

  • Strong external KOL network

  • Documented ability to take a project from start to end including conception, design, protocol, analytic plan, implementation, analysis, and reporting and interpretation of results

  • High degree of positive feedback from colleagues working with the incumbent in their current and previous positions.

  • Able to review, evaluate, interpret, and present complex data; ability to understand information on emerging safety and efficacy profile of pneumococcal vaccines

  • Understand the critical data elements related to assessing the public health value of pneumococcal vaccines, vaccine impact, and ability to interpret data and data limitations for both Pfizer and competitor pneumococcal vaccines

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including scientific writing skills.

  • Demonstrated experienced writing manuscripts, including lead or senior authorship on 3 or more peer-reviewed publications.

  • Fluent in English writing, reading, speaking; multiple languages a plus but not required
