In order to meet the expanding needs for pre–clinical imaging and radiation therapy (targeted, whole body and in vitro), The Wistar Institute Imaging Shared Resource has an opening for a service–oriented, highly motivated scientist to join its team as Co–Managing Director: Pre–Clinical Imaging and Radiotherapy. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary research environment with a variety of imaging and radiotherapy modalities including a state–of–the–art Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP), IVIS Spectrum CT and Vega Ultrasound system with image–guided injection.

Duties and responsibilities :

Directs, operates, maintains, and provides assistance for the daily operations of the Pre–clinical Imaging and Radiotherapy Facility including a Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP), IVIS Spectrum CT and Vega Ultrasound with Image Guided Injection. Operation and training with the SARRP to deliver targeted, image–guided radiation to rodents (mice) as well as whole body irradiation and in vitro cell irradiation. Direction and participation in radiation therapy treatment planning and machine support. Implementation of new treatment therapies, procedures and techniques using the SARRP. Development of general institutional policies for procedures used in radiation therapy. Including best practices for data acquisition and analysis. Implementation and operation of a routine physics QA program. Perform instrument calibration and routine mechanical testing and dosimetry for the SARRP and ancillary equipment. Develop relationships with existing and potential Researchers. Responsibility for the management of iLab, the software tool for Core Facility Operation, and associated billing events/financial managementfor pre–clinical instrumentation. Recommendation, implementation and maintenance of upgrades and improvements for pre–clinical instrumentation and their operating environments. Participation in scientific projects from inception to execution, analysis, and publication. Identifying gaps in current pre–clinical instrumentation and developing proposals to support the acquisition of equipment to support those needs. Cross–training with the optical imaging (microscopy) and image analysis section of the Core. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


Education requirements : Bachelor's degree in Physics, Bioengineering, Biology or related scientific discipline with 5 to 7 years of experience or a PhD in Physics, Bioengineering, Biology is required.

Experience Preferred: Experience in medical physics, including quality assurance, experimental design, radiation treatment planning, execution and analysis is critical. Must be able to work with small lab animals (mice) in a barrier facility and be able to operate anesthesia systems. Experience with preclinical, small animal imaging equipment is a plus. Programming experience using MatLab is preferred.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or other Qualifications: An enthusiastic approach to problem solving, a passion for learning, and an eagerness to explore new techniques. Ability to work in a team environment but also to work independently. Excellent organizational and writing skills. Fluency in English and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to initiate and support grant–writing activities for equipment procurement and Institute support.

Physical Demands: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently. Physical activity is considered light to moderate.
