Newcomers Health Program of the San Francisco Department of Public Health’s (SFDPH) Community Health Equity & Promotion Branch (CHEP) supports refugees, asylum-seekers, and other newcomer immigrants with health access and health assessment services.

This is a temporary, grant-funded, full-time, benefitted position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health. This position is 100% in person.

Pay range: $27.76-30.52 per hour

If hired for this position, you will be required to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to your start date, or have a valid religious or medical reason qualifying you for an exemption (that may or may not require accommodation).

Under the supervision of the Newcomers’ Asylum Seeker Health Services Lead, the Health Worker/Medical Interpreter will:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Conduct outreach to provide program information and navigation support services to connect asylum-seekers and other newly arrived immigrants to health services.
• Provide culturally appropriate health education, and navigation services for health and social support needs and referrals to community resources.
• Assist program participants in submission of public benefits applications as needed.
• Conduct phone and in-person intake—gather demographic information, patient and family medical histories, and social needs.
• Assist with health assessments and team-based care in a clinical setting.
• Perform clinical intake, such as collection of patient’s weight, height, temperature, and blood pressure, vision and hearing screening.
• Update patient records and maintain current documentation in Electronic Health Record (Epic) system and other program databases.
• Translate program materials and information into Spanish.
• Interpret for Spanish-speaking program participants as needed, in medical and community settings.
• Conduct community outreach, education, and presentations to individuals and community partners through meetings and events in Spanish and English
• Conduct administrative duties such as keeping records, responding to calls, texts, and emails, and arranging and scheduling appointments.
• Enter data and track program activities in program database.
• Participate in program, department, and partner meetings.
• Attend trainings on topics related to new immigrants and immigrant health, health equity, trauma-informed care, racial equity, and other areas.
• Keep informed of current trends in public health, immigrant health, the work of partner agencies, and community events and services.
• Meet all program required timelines and deadlines with accurate documentation per program work plan and procedures.
• Travel between program sites within San Francisco (public transportation is covered)
• Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
• Bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish.
• Basic knowledge of Medi-Cal and other health insurance options for immigrants in San Francisco, and other Bay Area counties.
• Ability to work with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in a team setting.
• Understanding of and practice in racial and cultural humility in working with patients, communities, and colleagues.
• Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
• Enthusiastic, reliable, self-starter, team player, desire to help people.
• Works well with people of various ages, genders, and socio-cultural backgrounds.
• Sensitive to mental and emotional health issues and providing trauma-informed care.
• Proficiency of Microsoft Office programs


Education/Experience
• High School diploma or equivalent; Desired: Certificate or AA/AS in community health, social work or related field
• At least one year paid or volunteer experience working with diverse populations in health, education, social service or related field.
• Possession of a Healthcare Interpreting or Community Health Worker Certificate from City College of San Francisco can substitute for 6 months of experience.
