Overview

This position serves as an enterprise leader and program manager responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving Summit Materials' safety culture and programs across all locations. This role leads cross-functional teams, manages a portfolio of safety projects, OneSummit safety programs, and ensures alignment with initiatives to create a unified approach to safety throughout the organization that reflects the organization's core values.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety Strategy and Leadership:
  • Contribute to the development and champion implementation of enterprise-wide safety strategies and initiatives aligned with company objectives.
  • Collaborate with safety and operations leadership to align safety programs with overall business objectives.
  • Manage a portfolio of enterprise safety projects, with impact and applicability across multiple locations and business units.
  • Coach leadership on creating a maintaining a strong Safety Culture at their locations.

Program Development and Implementation:
  • Develop, review, and enforce Corporate and site-specific safety policies and procedures.
  • Implement and manage the company's unified Safety Management System, including injury reporting, incident collection, and safety leading indicators aligned with OneSummit initiatives.
  • Lead the standardization of safety policies and procedures across all company locations.

Field Support and Compliance:
  • Conduct regular site visits (up to 50% travel) to perform safety audits, risk assessments, and provide on-site support.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations (OSHA, MSHA, DOT, FMCSA, etc.)
  • Lead incident investigations, develop systemic corrective actions, and track completion rates.
  • Provide field-based safety training and workshops.
  • Support incident triage and workers' compensation program, including claim management.

Safety Communication and Reporting:
  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety communication strategies.
  • Create engaging safety training materials and presentations.
  • Effectively communicate complex safety regulations, best practices, and focus areas to all levels of employees.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators for safety programs across the enterprise.
  • Develop and maintain safety dashboards and reporting systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information, insurance and litigation documents, employee information, and other sensitive and confidential information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety or a related field, or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years ' experience in occupational safety/risk capacity
  • Extensive knowledge of MSHA, OSHA, FMCSA and DOT regulations and construction safety.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning and execution of safety programs.
  • Strong program management and cross-functional team leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and technology used in safety management.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel 50% of the time.

Preferred:
  • Master's degree in safety management or related field.
  • BCSP CSP or ASP certification.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' experience in occupational safety/risk capacity
  • Experience in construction, materials manufacturing, or mining industry.
  • Previous experience in an enterprise-wide safety role

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to perform sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Capable of working at a computer for 6-8 hours per day, with the ability to operate routine office equipment, including, but not limited to, telephone, keyboard, fax machine, and calculator.
  • Able to work in various environments, including offices and outdoor industrial settings, including hot and dusty conditions.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as travel as required (50%)
  • Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Success in this role will be measured by:
  • Reduction in incident rates and severity across the organization.
  • Successful implementation of enterprise-wide safety initiatives, policies, and programs.
  • Improvement in safety leading indicators.
  • Positive feedback from field locations on safety support and training.
  • Compliance with all relevant safety regulations and internal policies.
  • Ability to work with and support a geographically dispersed leadership team and build positive relationships at all levels of the organization.
