About the Role:
As a Histology Specialist A, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the diagnostic viability of all specimens received, ensuring correct patient labeling, and performing a variety of histological procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Specimen Management:
- Maintain diagnostic viability and ensure correct labeling of all specimens.
- Embed routine tissue in paraffin, orient according to tissue type indicated on worksheet.
- Record the number of blocks received and organize them for sectioning.
- Sectioning and Staining:
- Section paraffin blocks using a microtome and mount sections on microscopic slides.
- Perform H&E and routine special staining of paraffin-embedded tissue.
- Coverslip prepared slides manually or using automated systems.
- Quality Assurance and Documentation:
- Record all slides and stains prepared in laboratory logbooks and the surgical pathology computer system.
- File paraffin tissue blocks and document daily QA/QC charts for laboratory equipment.
- Identify and troubleshoot problems under supervision.
- Training and Equipment Maintenance:
- Assist in orienting and training new laboratory staff.
- Prepare and maintain solutions for routine staining and ensure equipment is in proper working order.
- Follow laboratory safety protocols and participate in continuing education sessions.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency required; A.S., B.S., or B.A. in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NAACLS accredited histology technician training program highly desired.
- 1 year of experience in a histology lab.
- HT (ASCP) certification eligible.
