Summary: This position is part of a multi-function group where the main focus will be centrifugal compressor aerodynamics with high involvement in all aspects of simulation. We are seeking a Development Engineer who is a team player, and knowledgeable in centrifugal compressor design and development, compressor aerodynamics, fluids simulation, and mechanical simulation. In this role, you will design and develop new products, and improve existing products, while accounting for quality, cost, and delivery targets. Furthermore, this position will require exposure to multiple disciplines and work in all aspects of product development from start to finish.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Detailed and advanced centrifugal compressor design from one-dimensional mean line analysis through to 3D CFD analysis. This includes the complete centrifugal compressor aero flow path, both rotating and stationary, of both single and two stage compressors.
  • Evaluates all mechanical aspects to ensure the product designed and developed will meet life cycle requirements. This will include detail stress, vibration, modal, fatigue analysis of all designed components.
  • Detailed involvement in all steps in the product development process/life cycle, from customer requirement, to design, to prototype manufacturing, to product qualification, to final product implementation and product launch.
  • Product development and product release for global regions.
  • Communicates with all suppliers and vendors to ensure all designed parts are manufactured as specified, within specified tolerances, and delivered within schedule.
  • Develops parts qualification process/procedure and makes decisions pass/fail from developed criteria.
  • Manages allocated budget and manage all required purchases for completion of development project.
  • In-depth involvement in all aspects of the test phase to validate design. Provides detailed aerodynamic analysis based on the CFD and experimental data.
  • Writes detailed test plans, guides, supervises, instructs and supports lab technicians on all compressor testing activities.
  • Provides accurate and precise product performance results for marketing and sales for product selection.
  • Collaborates and communicates with other teams in the product development process/projects to ensure final product meets all objectives and customer requirements in all product areas.
  • Provides documentation for all projects and tasks throughout the development process.
  • Supports teams on all simulation requests and requirements to provide solutions to problems, new product designs, and current product improvements.
  • Supports and occasionally leads product development team. Leads, guides, and/or participates in new technology research and product development projects as requested.
  • Guides and directs designers to create prototype and production drawings. As required, reviews, modifies, and signs off on engineering and production drawings.
  • Provides technical mentoring, direction and guidance to other engineers.

General Duties

  • Provides solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Gives advice, analyzes information or serves as a professional resource on whom others may rely within a specific function.
  • Participates as an engineering representative in cross-functional New Product Introduction process.
  • Evaluates, analyzes, and makes recommendations on products, designs, and cost improvements to improve the competitive position of the company.
  • Procures materials needed to construct prototypes and supervises the design engineering of new models.
  • Plans and develops test programs for prototypes.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if designs meet functional, performance, and safety specifications.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, sources, and coordinates the procurement of new materials to support model changes.
  • Analyzes, evaluates, and recommends cost improvement ideas through product, vendor, and design changes.
  • Performs technical analysis of competitive products.
  • Provides support to sales and marketing on product presentations and customer support.
  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (Technical, Scientific, Engineering),
  • 0-3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to design entire aero flow path, both rotating and stationary, of centrifugal compressor.
  • Knowledge of turbomachinery, specifically centrifugal compressors, both aero and mechanical.
  • Solid fundamental understanding in aerodynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Experience in product testing and data acquisition, with emphasis on compressor performance validation and compressor mapping.
  • Experience in design and manufacturing of high performance centrifugal compressor impellers.
  • Solid fundamental understanding of mechanical engineering principles with focus on stress analysis, mechanics of materials, vibration, fatigue, and failure modes.
  • Strong team player with focus on team goals, team objectives, and team deadlines.
  • Ability to work in team, as well as independently with little support.
  • Ability to handle face-paced work environment and handle pressure to deliver results on an aggressive development schedule.
  • In-depth knowledge of principles and practices of engineering, preferably in the HVAC industry.
  • PC skills including Microsoft office applications. Basic skills with CAD applications, a plus.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical literature, safety standards, operating and maintenance instructions, test reports, and engineering drawings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and speak effectively before cross functional groups of employees within the organization.
  • Ability to apply mathematical tools, engineering principles and practices to solve problems involving a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists. Ability to support the development of highly variable products that can be dynamically configured at the time of order using rules-based engineering tools. Some original analysis and interpretation is needed to arrive at conclusions.

Preferred Requirements

  • Knowledge of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis).
  • Experience using commercial CFD and FEA codes. Preferably experience using the ANSYS simulation suite.
  • Understands optimization and optimization process. Experience using commercial optimization codes/software will be a plus.
  • Experience in product testing and data acquisition, with emphasis on compressor performance validation and compressor mapping.
  • Experience in design and manufacturing of high performance centrifugal compressor impellers.
  • Experience in vibration and rotordynamics analysis is a plus.
  • Requires basic knowledge of test data analysis software and tools.
  • Solid Project Management experience.
