Primary Purpose

Work with clinical nursing leadership and end users to identify issues or opportunities that will improve quality of care, safety, satisfaction, and/or efficiency related to nursing practices. The nursing informatics specialist will collaborate closely with clinical nursing and Information Technology (IT) to facilitate clinical nursing-related informatics initiatives and projects. Assist with capturing process flows and identifying the ideal informatics solutions to promote the nursing needs and help translate needs to the IT teams where necessary. Provides support for the clinician in the organization to troubleshoot issues, integration of system-wide initiatives, research, and development. Collaborates with nursing and IT teams to develop and deliver training materials and updates to policy and procedure.

 

Minimum Specifications

 

Education:

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) or must complete BSN within three years of hire/placement in the role from an accredited school of nursing.

 

Experience:

  • Must have three (3) plus years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Must have two (2) plus years of project experience managing complex projects in a nursing department.
  • Must have two (2) plus years of progressive experience in computer applications and / or computer operations.
  • Two (2) plus years of experience in the planning, development, and evaluation of adult education programs.
  • One (1) plus years of experience in Epic documenting and reviewing patient charts.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience:

- May have an equivalent combination of education and experience in lieu of specific education and experience as stated above.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure:

  • Must have current RN license or valid temporary permit with the Texas Board of Nursing; or, valid Compact RN license.
  • Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following:
    • American Heart Association
    • American Red Cross Rescuer
    • Military Training Network.
  • Must obtain Proficiency/Certification in the Epic application within 18 months of placement in the position. Current incumbents have 18 months from 07/04/2018 to obtain proficiency/certification.
  • Must have a certification in Informatics Nursing through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or Certified Professional in Health Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) within 24 months of placement in the position. Current incumbents have 24 months from 07/04/2018 to obtain certification.

  • Must innovate and develop solutions for issues or new build, using clinical nursing operational needs and IT options for a given application.
  • Must be able to solve minor technology related issues on the spot and facilitate solving complicated issues and requests with IT colleagues which allows the nursing customer to focus on clinical care.
  • Must demonstrate competency in the processes involved in the interface between clinical practices as well as the information systems to be able to interpret clinical need and translate it into requirements for the programmer supporting the area.
  • Must possess strong prioritization skills, be able to work independently and manage multiple projects. Must be able to prepare project schedules, budgets, and reports.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to interact effectively with all levels of internal/external staff, consultants, and vendors.
  • Must have excellent presentation skills, and personal computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel software; conduct/lead meetings, and create agenda/minutes
  • Must be well-versed and facile with the Epic EHR in the subject area of the designated duties for the job. - Must have strong database management, analytical and statistical skills; have the ability to mine, analyze, and trend data.
  • Must demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.

 

Responsibilities:

 

1. Works with customers to define project objectives and manage priorities within the project and timelines. Assists customers in problem identification and resolution. Demonstrates skills in coordinating problem resolution activities.

 

2. Applies nursing informatics science when coordinating system analysis, design, and implementation of clinical applications. Coordinates evaluation of project goals with the pilot and full implementation of Clinical Informatics projects. Documents and tests clinic system workflows. Creates, designs, and implements end-user training. Research, analyze, and makes recommendations for application workflow improvements based on a deep understanding of the clinical workflow.

 

3. Facilitates superuser groups and various other user groups; provides on-going support to clinical users

 

4. Performs quality control checks on IS updates/revisions; participates in testing of clinical system changes before actual production occurs.

 

5. Responsible for effective problem-solving of operations system issues that arise during implementation (including physician and interdisciplinary teams). Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes, workflows, etc. for the Nursing Informatics area and implements appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency that support the overall goals of the department and PHHS. Participates with process improvement teams to review current processes and workflows, identify and design improvements, and incorporate such improvements into implementations of new systems.

 

6. Collaborates with Clinical Education and IT Training to identify training needs and develop/deliver end-user educational content

 

7. Collaborates with application teams to coordinate and take a lead role in customer user groups. Coordinates support, including processing and follow-up of requests for enhancements and changes from users and /or others affected by the system.

 

8. Collaboration/consultation with other Clinical Informatics project team members including Physicians, Administrators, Departmental Leaders in defining practices for nurses and/or nursing and clinical departments in regard to a multidisciplinary online record.

 

9. Develops policies and procedures for introducing, evaluating, and modifying information technology applied to nursing science. Collaborates with the Nursing Policy and Procedure Committee to update and revise policies and procedures.

 

10. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Nursing and Health Care Informatics, by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and maintaining nursing licensure. Integrates knowledge gained from current work practices. Participates in all safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.

 

11. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Nursing Informatics area. Assists in the development of policies and procedures for introducing, evaluating and modifying information technology applied to nursing science. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

 

12. Become well-versed both in the standard nursing practices as well as of new functionalities coming from the vendors of the applications utilized in the assigned area. Spearheading the implementation of enhancements that are minor and collaborating with colleagues and clinical departments in case of major changes.
