Overview of the position

The Senior Environmental Health & Safety Manager plays a critical role in mitigating risks across all aspects of our construction operations. This position ensures alignment between safety objectives and construction field goals, focusing on the prevention of accidents, injuries, and work-related illnesses. By developing and implementing comprehensive health and safety policies in compliance with the latest regulations, the role ensures these standards are effectively communicated and enforced across all levels, from fleet management to job site safety. The Senior EHS Manager drives operational excellence, contributing to key business outcomes such as client satisfaction, business growth, and a culture of continuous improvement. Above all, this role is dedicated to ensuring every employee returns home safely each day.

This position reports to the Director of Risk Management.

Required education / experience 

  • A. degree in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering or Occupational Health with at least 15 years construction safety experience or combination of certifications (below) with a minimum of 10 yearsâ experience in commercial building construction with extensive knowledge and experience within environmental health and safety.
  • At least 10 years working knowledge of CAL/OSHA construction safety orders or other applicable regulations relating to employee safety and accident prevention, including field safety.
  • Must have 10 or more years prior experience designing and implementing Health and Safety related process improvements and programs.
  • 10 years or more actual experience analyzing complex safety policies, practices and procedures and simplifying them by using clear, concise language, graphics, checklists and flowcharts etc.
  • 10 or more yearsâ experience in training and educating others in both large & small groups in field & office settings.
  • Minimum of 10 yearsâ experience identifying known or potential safety hazards and exposures and recommending corrective action(s) and or collaboratively identifying solutions and alternative options.

  • One or more of the following certificates preferred:
    • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST)
    • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
    • Certified Safety Director (CSD)
    • Master Safety Professional (MSP)

  • Manages multiple tasks effectively, demonstrates strong planning and organizational skills, and refines metrics to drive performance improvements.
  • Capable of interpreting complex technical documents, writing clear policies and procedures, and training internal trainers.
  • Proactively contributes to the development and implementation of safety plans, ensures compliance, and mediates safety-related conflicts within teams.
  • Actively builds and maintains strong relationships with Field Operations and external partners, including industry groups and regulatory bodies, to advance safety initiatives.
  • Operates as a resource to projects and staff, enabling success by reducing barriers and facilitating effective solutions.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for active and potential projects, identifying areas of potential risk and collaborating with project teams to mitigate these risks.
  • Perform frequent safety inspections, audits, and checks of all job sites and facilities, with particular focus on high-risk activities such as electrical work, working at heights, and specialized safety plans.
  • Analyze, simplify, and implement safety policies, practices, and procedures using clear language, checklists, and flowcharts, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Train employees on health and safety procedures, specific job-related risks, PPE usage, and incident reporting protocols, ensuring understanding and proficiency through assessments and continuous improvement measures.
  • Manage health and safety initiatives, including permit renewals, training classes, emergency procedures, and first aid programs, while maintaining compliance with regulations and company standards.
  • Develop and oversee site-specific safety plans and provide input on project-specific safety considerations, including crane pick plans, site logistics, and OSHA-permitted activities.
  • Act as a liaison between the company and regulatory bodies such as CAL/OSHA, maintaining compliance logs (including OSHA 300), managing inspections, and ensuring proper communication during audits.
  • Lead by example to promote a positive health and safety culture across all job sites, consistently achieving or exceeding performance metrics and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare detailed reports based on inspections and audit results, providing actionable insights to administrative teams.
  • Manage all aspects of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) projects and ensure alignment with operational strategies and priorities.
  • Assist in the pre-planning of jobs, supporting Superintendents and Project Managers with the implementation of safety policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain new employee orientation programs, keeping training content up-to-date and ensuring that certifications are current.
  • This position may require:
    • Frequent travel between company office locations (including locations in the Greater Bay Area, Greater Sacramento, Thousand Oaks, and San Diego regions) with occasional overnight stays lasting up to one week.
    • Attendance at professional conferences, seminars, and training sessions, potentially occasional overnight stays lasting up to one week.
    • The role demands flexibility to travel for 15-35% of the working time.
  • Other duties may be assigned as the role advances.

  • This role involves regular visits to construction sites and office visits.
  • Sitting/Standing: remaining in stationary positions often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Fast-paced project site and project office environment
  • Required to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to maintain safety and prevent exposure to harmful materials.
  • The environment may be exposed to prolonged loud noises and may contain scents and fragrances.
  • Occasionally required to position objects, operate tools or controls, and maneuver in confined or awkward spaces.
  • Required to ascend and/or descend ladders or stairs to reach work areas.
  • Must have the ability to work at height, in enclosed or confined spaces, and climb stairs and ladders in a construction/plant environment.
  • Driving: Travel is required. Operation of a motorized passenger vehicle.
  • Speaking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately.
  • Hearing: ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds in person speech, telephone, and virtual remote speech.
  • Keyboarding: working on a computer entering text or data into a computer or other machine through a traditional keyboard.
  • Vision: specific vision abilities including close vision and ability to adjust focus. Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less including use of computers. Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more, for driving purposes. Glasses or contact lenses are acceptable components to reach this physical demand.
  • Lift, push, pull: Able to push, pull, lift up to 20 pounds at time, ability to lift files, laptops, office desk items, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool, as necessary.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds from floor to waist.
