San Francisco, United States Pomelo Full time

Pomelo’s mission is to increase financial access and empowerment for immigrants and their loved ones back home.

We are proud to be the first financial technology platform to combine consumer credit and global remittances. Our product solves the worst aspects of money transfer by empowering our customers to use credit rather than cash. At the same time, we help immigrants establish their financial future in their new country by building positive credit history with their existing remittance obligations and financially include their loved ones in emerging economies with access to modern financial instruments.

We’re a team of ~45 and are growing our San Francisco headquarters. Our investors include Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures (formerly of Founders Fund, CEO at Opendoor, former COO of Square), Kevin Hartz (Co-founder/CEO of Xoom and Eventbrite) of A* Capital, The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd, and more.

Your Role

As a product designer, your role will be to create wonderful experiences that unify user needs and business outcomes. You will be responsible for creating clear, easy to use, and delightful product experiences that help our customers and build trust over time. You will be working across the entire customer journey, from potential customers first learning about Pomelo to returning customers who rely on us for their money transfer needs. You will be adept at developing designs that are guided by customer insights and data, whether they be qualitative research or experiment results.

This is an individual contributor role that reports directly to the VP of Product and will work closely with our Lead Product Designer. As the company’s second product designer, you will have an active role in helping to build and shape Pomelo’s design culture and processes.

Although your primary responsibility is product design, we want you to be a voice for all design at Pomelo, including marketing- and brand-related design. You will work with other teams throughout the company, acting as a trusted partner to counterparts in product management, engineering, growth, marketing, and analytics, among others.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Think holistically about complex systems, empathize with users, and understand business goals to create insightful, compelling, effective, and delightful consumer experiences.
  • Create and validate designs through sketches, prototypes, and testing, determine the information architecture and flow for your product features, create high-fidelity visuals and specifications for your final solutions, and work with colleagues to ensure quality implementation and user experience.
  • Work effectively in a fast paced, collaborative environment with colleagues such as product managers, engineers, growth marketers, and analysts to identify, prioritize, and build highly impactful experiences.
  • Help build and maintain our design system and advocate for design solutions that scale designs from discovery through delivery, leveraging the right tools at the right moments to make the most significant impact.
  • Help build and shape the design culture, processes, and use of tools.
  • Be a passionate champion for design who proactively finds opportunities, form an opinion on them, and advocates to get them built.

The requirements

  • Minimum 4–6 years of professional work experience in an individual contributor role as a product designer.
  • An outstanding portfolio, showcasing a depth of knowledge in user experience, interaction, and visual/user interface design for consumer products.
  • Experienced in designing for user-facing fintech products.
  • Experienced at taking a design project from discovery and iteration through delivery and shipping of high-quality experiences.
  • Understands the end-to-end process required to deliver great design but able to flex and modify the process depending on project and team context.
  • Experienced in driving research and using qualitative and quantitative data to make good design decisions,
  • Able to collaborate effectively with product designers, product managers, engineers, and other cross-functional team members.
  • Relentless, scrappy, and highly adaptable in the face of new constraints and challenges in a dynamic early stage startup environment.
  • Able to identify tradeoffs and make good decisions on what can be done now vs later and to strike a meaningful balance between quality vs. speed.
  • Excellent communicator who can explain, educate, and persuade. Able to present effectively, lead meetings, and write with clarity to drive understanding.
  • Strong leadership and team mindset.
  • Systems thinker who connects the different aspects of the customer experience and creates cohesiveness throughout the product.
  • Strong craft from a visual, interaction, written, and systems perspective.
  • Superb design judgment and taste.
  • B.A/B.S. in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field/equivalent experience.

Ideal qualifications

  • Previous experience with money transfer, consumer credit, or consumer fintech products.
  • Previous experience working in an early-stage startup.
