The two-time Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins, primary affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, announce an opening for a Public Relations Writing Intern. The internship starts in October 2024 and lasts until the conclusion of the 2024-25 American Hockey League season (April-June 2025, depending on playoffs).  This internship is intended to help prepare the individual for employment with a professional sports team. Previous members of the Griffins public relations department have continued on to work for the Bakersfield Condors (AHL), Baltimore Ravens (NFL), Berlin Thunder (NFL Europe), Boston Bruins (NHL), Carolina Cobras (AFL), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), Chicago White Sox (MLB), Cleveland Browns (NFL), Cleveland Monsters (AHL), Cornerstone University (WHAC), Denver Broncos (NFL), Denver Outlaws (MLL), Detroit Lions (NFL), Detroit Red Wings (NHL), Detroit Tigers (MLB), Detroit Vipers (IHL), Ferris State University (GLIAC), Florida Panthers (NHL), Grand Rapids Rampage (AFL), Grand Valley State University (GLIAC), Houston Texans (NFL), Indianapolis Indians (IL), Las Vegas Raiders (NFL), Lincoln Stars (USHL), New York Jets (NFL), New York Rangers (NHL), Oakland Raiders (NFL), San Antonio Rampage (AHL), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL), Toledo Mud Hens (IL), Toledo Walleye (ECHL), United States Soccer Federation, University of Florida (SEC), USA Cycling, USA Hockey, Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) and Wartburg College (ARC).  Reports To: 
  • Vice President of Communications 
  • Public Relations Manager 
 Responsibilities: 
  • Road Games: Oversee and handle in-game and post-game media relations responsibilities for all 36 regular-season games from residence, including watching the live stream on AHLTV.com; writing a game recap that is posted to griffinshockey.com and emailed to media outlets; creating multimedia content/links; and updating griffinshockey.com and social media sites; 
  • Home Games: Largely as above, but attending games in-person at Van Andel Arena (which includes additional home game intern responsibilities such as press box setup, distribution of media credentials, and assisting PR staff in the press box); 
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned. 
 Qualifications: 
  • Recent college graduate, senior/junior-year undergraduate student, or post-graduate student, majoring in communications, sport management, journalism, public relations, or related field; 
  • Availability to work 36 road games from residence plus 36 home games at Van Andel Arena, primarily on nights and weekends and including holidays, plus playoffs; 
  • Possesses own computer with reliable internet access; 
  • Astute knowledge of and interest in hockey; 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including working knowledge of and adherence to AP Style; 
  • Intense desire to progress professionally within the sports PR or sports media industry; 
  • Creativity, exacting attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage a variety of simultaneous tasks and meet deadlines; 
  • Computer proficiency, including website and social media management; 
  • Self-starting, highly motivated individual with exceptional work ethic, unquestioned dependability, and proven success at working independently; 
  • Personal, professional demeanor. 
 Compensation: 
  • Hourly wage

  • School credit (if applicable)
