Summary of Job Duties:
The School of Journalism and Strategic Media in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice in Sports Journalism to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment. We seek a candidate with a strong and developing professional reputation who demonstrates curiosity in emerging technologies and novel approaches to traditional methods.
This non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice position entails contributing to the development of a concentrated sports journalism program at a Southeastern Conference school, including duties such as teaching multiple sports-related classes as well as foundational courses in media writing, and demonstrating a commitment to building an inclusive scholarly environment through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and service.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
About the School:
The School of Journalism and Strategic Media offers degree programs in Advertising/Public Relations and Journalism, with concentrations in multimedia storytelling and production, broadcast journalism and journalism. Students are trained in multiplatform news production, media analysis, campaign planning, social media, as well as television, radio and multimedia programming. The school offers numerous student media organizations and registered student organizations, an active community outreach program, award-winning faculty and a Center for Media Ethics in Journalism. Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate
Master’s degree in journalism (or a related field) from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment
Professional applicable equivalencies may be considered on the above qualifications.
At least two years of noteworthy professional experience in sports journalism
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to teach introductory content to support the core curriculum at the undergraduate level, including foundational courses in media writing
Demonstrated ability to teach multiple courses related to sports journalism
At least five years of noteworthy full-time professional experience related to sports journalism with major national or regional news outlets
Professional experience in covering NCAA Division 1 Sports, as well as expertise in investigative journalism, particularly working with Freedom of Information Act requests
Two or more years of successful teaching experience
Experience in administering and implementing strategic initiatives, new courses, and curricular programs for sports journalism
Demonstrated ability of professional skills in broadcast/video/multiplatform journalism, including working in a production control room, web production, audience analytics, and/or social media
