What You Will Do:

The Learning Support Specialist (Math) or (Math/CSIS) plays a critical role in supporting NLU students by encouraging students to take an active role in their education and empowering them to become independent, lifelong learners. The primary responsibility is to tutor students in the fundamental skills of math, statistics, financial math (i.e. accounting) and computer science/information systems (if applicable) on the Chicago campus and online. Tutoring occurs through one-on-one appointments and in small workshops utilizing various modes, including in-person, by phone, as well as via email and video conferencing software. The Learning Support Specialist will help monitor and communicate the progress of students, particularly those who are identifed as below-level in their math or math and computer science skills, reach out to at-risk students, and accurately track student tutoring usage. The Learning Support Specialist responsibilities also include scheduled hours in Study Tables as needed and promoting Study Tables and Learning Support/CSIS (if applicable) offerings with faculty and other stakeholders. The Learning Support Specialist (Math) or (Math/CSIS) will support faculty and students in math-intensive courses as well as scheduled hours for in-class Computer Science & Information Systems support (if applicable).

This is a grant funded position through September 26, 2026.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Tutor for general education math courses at the college math, algebra, statistics and math content for teachers' levels as well as general academic skills, including Microsoft Excel navigation. Provide math support for major and graduate courses with substantial math components. Additionally, if applicable, tutor for Computer Science & Information Systems courses at the college level.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support at-risk students. Conduct class visits at the beginning of each term, respond to faculty alerts, and provide embedded support in online and blended courses.
  • Create and present math (and CSIS if applicable) workshops/webinars to support students in their math (and CSIS) classes to help improve their academic skills.
  • Monitor and track student progress and usage of tutoring services.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Math or Computer Science required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of prior teaching or tutoring experience in math (and computer science if applicable) in diverse modalities (hybrid/blended, online). Knowledge of math (and computer science if applicable) instructional/tutoring practices, particularly in the areas of college math, algebra, statistics, math content for teachers, accounting and other financial math as well as programming languages such as Python, Java, etc. (if applicable) and willingness to learn the departments' curriculums.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills with ability to develop and maintain genuine, positive, and consistent communication.
  • Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities, especially multilingual, ELL, and multidialectal students
  • Math/CSIS Knowledge: Must have experience tutoring or teaching math-related and computer science skills and content along with knowledge of graphing calculators, Microsoft Excel as well as programming languages: Python, Java, etc. (if tutoring for CSIS).
  • Finding Teaching Resources: Takes initiative to find and utilize supplemental teaching resources that will enhance student engagement and learning. Looks outside the school for learning resources, including what may be available on-line or from colleagues at other schools. Also investigates journals and other publications. Encourages students to explore other resources and report on their results. Acknowledges and addresses issues of unequal access to technology for specific students.
  • Time Management: Prioritizes tasks and manages time to ensure that deadlines are met. Plans his or her time and sticks to those plans. Prevents or manages interruptions until the highest priority tasks are accomplished.
  • Content Specific Knowledge: Familiarity with and willingness to learn, concepts from college math, college algebra, statistics, math content for teachers, accounting and other financial math, and Computer Science & Information Systems (if applicable).
