Natural Leaders is seeking experienced and enthusiastic guides to lead youth in outdoor adventures, develop character and wilderness survival skills, and grow into leaders. We have a simple, authentic culture, and over the last couple years our team has grown from 3 to 15 people

Positions available:

Summer Day Program Instructors - 6/10-8/23. M-F, 9am-4pm. Lead groups (mixed ages 7-13yrs+) in Northern Virginia and/or Maryland, outside Washington, DC.  Paid training starts June 10th, and we wrap up by August 23. Opportunity to be considered for a lead guide position with us into the Academic Year (Sep 2024 - June 2025 onward) if interested.

Must be available (5 weeks listed below at minimum, opportunity for 3-4 additional weeks if interested):

  • JUNE - Training Week -  6/10 - 6/14 

  • JUNE - 6/24 - 6/28

  • JULY - 7/29 - 8/2

  • AUGUST - 8/12 - 8/16

  • AUGUST - 8/19 - 8/23

Our summer camps bring kids out into the woods each day to explore, play in the water, play games, journal, and practice wilderness survival skills.  During the academic year we have similar activities but in a unique student-led format.

Position Requirements:

  • Experience working with children

  • Positive attitude

  • Self-starter

  • Reliable, effective communication skills

  • Comfortability being outside for extended periods of time (no matter the weather) 

  • Physical ability to carry a backpack with supplies (incl. water) & hike in the range of 2-3+ miles on variable terrain daily.  

  • Drivers license & consistent access to a reliable vehicle for commutes (~ 30 min - 1hr) locally 

  • Working smart phone. Consistent access to laptop, computer, wifi when not in the field. Comfortable navigating basic modern technology (phone apps, online platforms, text messaging, etc.). 

Other helpful qualifications:

  • Experience with primitive skills, tracking, wilderness awareness, bushcraft, wilderness survival programs

  • Experience as a lifeguard, or facilitating adventure sports like whitewater/river, rock-climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, backpacking.

  • Have a passion for sharing nature with children.

  • Appreciate the importance of character development and personal growth, for yourself and your students.

  • Humble, curious, open, and excited to learn and grow.

  • First Aid certification is good; WFA better, WFR+ ideal.

  • Studied at the Tracker School, WAS, BOSS, Outward Bound, NOLS, or similar program.

  • Background with Waldorf Education, Montessori, Acton, experiential outdoor education, or other teaching experience.
