The Department of Global Health of the Boston University School of Public Health conducts research and evaluation, teaches, and engages in public health practice in low-and middle-income countries around the world. Department Faculty lead 6 Boston University School of Public Health certificates for the MPH degree, and participate in 8 global NGOs, World Health Organization Guidelines Committees, and many other international organizations. We have expertise in a wide range of disciplines including adult and pediatric medicine, data science, demography, epidemiology, health economics, health systems strengthening, and pharmaceutical policy. We focus on Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS, Respiratory Infections, Tuberculosis (TB) and emerging infectious diseases), Maternal and Child Health, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and more recently on Mental Health and the Impact of Climate Change on Global Health.

The GH department is looking for a qualified external instructor to teach GH755: Public Health Management in Disasters and Complex Humanitarian Emergencies
This four-credit master of public health course exposes public health students to various aspects of disasters and complex emergencies and discusses practical ways to respond. Topics discussed include the causes and consequences of disasters and complex emergencies, population displacements and the public health effects. Immediate rapid response to an emergency and disaster risk reduction and preparedness are discussed. Students also learn public health interventions, including how to establish essential services such as shelter, food and nutrition, water and sanitation, health services and logistics systems. The critical role of donor agencies and the media is discussed. Students also learn how to prepare for personal involvement of living and working in relief situations. The course will be offered in spring 2025 (14 sessions). Each session is covered in three hours.

Effective Date: Spring 2025 semester, open until filled.

Required Skills

Requirements:
• At least five years of experience in public health;
• Master's or doctorate in public health or related field, or equivalent professional experience;
• College-level teaching experience preferred;
• Proven ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
