Job Description:

This position is in the Medical Oncology service at the College of Veterinary Medicine department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The main responsibilities are to aid in the design, development, and execution of clinical and laboratory research endeavors led by Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell and other Medical Oncology faculty.

SUPPORT OF PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS: Projects involve both client-owned and research animals and cadavers researching areas related to oncology and pain management techniques. Typical assignments for the research laboratory include the following:

Assist in:

  • Directing, coordinating, and organizing laboratory activities
  • Managing laboratory teams and monitoring the quality of a team’s work
  • Instructing students in methods or procedures
  • Designing sampling plans and coordinating the collection of samples
  • Drafting IACUC applications and grant proposals
  • Acquiring of research animals and cadaveric specimens

Collect/Store/Analyze:

  • Storage of biological samples (blood, urine, feces, tissues)
  • Collect and/or dissect specimens; examine specimens grossly and/or under microscope
  • Analyze research data: be able to design, perform and analyze studies independently using training/experience in statistics, experimental design, and the use of computer software specific to statistical analysis and graphing of results

Modify:

  • Laboratory experiments while overseeing their execution and assist in reviewing, approving, or interpreting results
  • Existing computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals

Oversee:

  • Management and organization of cadaveric specimens and live animal colonies
  • Laboratory animal care, consistently monitor the health and status of research cats and dogs, provide routine care as dictated by research projects, and coordinate and supervise support personnel to help with animals and projects
  • Liaison between the PIs and Animal Care Services and IACUC

*Training to be provided upon hire, if needed:

  • Various molecular analysis techniques in the laboratory; experience with cell culture, RNA-seq, RNA extraction techniques
  • Central line placements, nociception testing, blood sampling and other clinical techniques (the incumbent should have experience in low-stress handling and physical restraint of cats and dogs, as well as sample collection [including venipuncture, cystocentesis, etc.], catheterization, calculating fluid rates and other techniques)

CLINICAL RESEARCH DUTIES:

  • Schedule and coordinate appointments for clinical trial patients
  • Assist PIs in collecting history from owners, performing physical exams and obtaining samples (blood, urine, feces and others)
  • Process and bank samples
  • Assist PIs in special procedures (endoscopy, surgery, etc.)

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Research laboratory: Supervise the general operations of the laboratory. This includes maintaining equipment use schedules, maintaining inventory, purchasing supplies, complying with EH&S requirements, routine maintenance of equipment and laboratory order and cleanliness, and preparing written protocols and supply lists
  • UF procedures and policies: complete training on an annual basis to insure the safe and proper functioning of the laboratory
  • Supervisory: directly supervise volunteers, students, residents and/or fellows

OTHER DUTIES: as assigned

Expected Salary:

$45,600; commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in biology or a related field with 1 year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician
  • Laboratory experience in handling biological samples
  • Animal handling experience with mice, dogs, and cats
  • Experience using standard laboratory equipment
  • Time management, organization skills, the ability to multi-task and work collaboratively
  • Experience with IACUC, CRCC, EH&S, and GLP policies
  • Proficiency in grant writing, study proposals, and manuscript preparation
  • Experience in low-stress handling and physical restraint of cats and dogs as well as sample collection (including venipuncture, cystocentesis, etc.), catheterization, calculating fluid rates and other techniques
  • Experience with MS Office applications, Adobe Design Suite, statistical software (SPSS, GraphPad Prism), and reference managing software (Endnote)
