Job Title: Building Engineering Technician 1

Hours: Full-time

About the role:

We are seeking a Building Engineering Technician 1 to perform the duties pertaining to the maintenance of building mechanical, lighting systems, minor electrical, and plumbing repair. In the absence of and at the discretion of the Supervisor, this position may assist in daily routine duties and be the point of contact for the department. This position reports directly to the Building Engineering Supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Knowledge and experience in maintenance and construction practices and methods.

  • Performs a trade for the purpose of resolving immediate operational and/or safety concerns and providing for preventative maintenance.

  • Responsible for providing support for various building engineering projects in several areas including, but not limited to, public buildings, animal holding, animal displays, offices, and visitor areas.

  • Conduct the daily operations and basic maintenance of HVAC systems and controls, elevator systems, life safety systems, emergency power systems, electrical, plumbing requirements of buildings.

  • Perform preventive maintenance & repair duties, including inspecting/adjusting HVAC components, changing filters, grease bearings, inspect belts, replace light fixtures, bulbs & ballasts, automating door/hardware repairs, commercial kitchen equipment repair, plumbing repair, and other related items as required.

  • Perform daily inspections of properties taking care of items immediately without direction by supervisors.

  • Recommend improvements for the preventive maintenance program on an on-going basis.

  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs with outside contractors and technicians as needed.

  • Maintain stock inventory control.

  • Respond immediately to emergency situations and work orders.

  • Comply with all applicable codes and company policies related to building operations.

  • May be required to work extended periods of time for priority/emergency situations (including overtime type assignments).

  • Procure equipment, tools, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.

  • Responsible for the safe operation of all related equipment.

  • Prepare required reports including but not limited to work orders, progress reports, and records of scheduled maintenance procedures.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • OSHA certifications: 10 hour or ability to obtain withing 12 months of employment.

  • Two years of general knowledge with building systems control or related experience or equivalency.

  • General knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems, and pneumatic and electronic control systems; and familiarity with heating and air conditioning systems required. A working knowledge and understanding of mechanical equipment, automation, and field hardware; demonstrated computer literacy.

  • Strong customer service and effective communication skills are required.

  • Working knowledge Microsoft Suite and Windows platform systems.

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions; operate, and/or ability to learn to operate standard maintenance tools and equipment.

Candidates might be (depending on position) required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative skin tuberculosis test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.

  • Will be exposed frequently to outside, potentially adverse, weather conditions.

  • Must be able to traverse zoo grounds on foot.

  • Will be regularly exposed to water, chemicals, loud noises, dust, animal danger, etc.

  • Must possess visual acuity appropriate for animal care and general safety practices.

  • Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.

  • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
