Develops, organizes, and implements a variety of assessments and services required for the maintenance of a pest-free environment.Investigates reports, inspects and monitors facilities, identifies and controls infestations and infestation risks, and coordinates delivery of services.Integrates services with appropriate departments.Maintains accurate records of reports and response actions.Maintains product and equipment inventories.Maintains current knowledge of technological and regulatory changes.Interfaces with Hospital personnel to successfully integrate services, emphasizing sanitation and structural repairs, and other methods required to successfully manage urban arthropod and vertebrate commensals, parasites, and mechanical disease vectors, while minimizing pesticide use.Provides input into MGH main campus and satellite building integrated projects.Works cooperatively with outside service vendors.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES\:

Plans, organizes and implements environmental quality assessments and services related to integrated pest management (IPM).Responds to service requests and performs preventive services based on master schedules.Follows service schedules and adapts schedules to daily service needs.Manages pesticide use as necessary for the Hospital as required and according to MGH departmental policies and procedures and Federal EPA and State regulations.Maintains accurate records and supply inventories, prepares and discusses activities with Supervisor.

Interfaces with Hospital staff who receive and/or request pest management services.Investigates and reports on acute and frequently recurring problems to Supervisor and appropriate Hospital staff.Tracks critical problems until they are resolved.

Keeps abreast of current regulations and relevant developments in technology and advises appropriate staff of impending and/or promulgated regulations.

Provides routine in-service IPM education to Housekeeping, Dietary, and Nursing staff, principle investigators and researchers, and construction and Maintenance personnel as required.

May direct and train assistant and/or auxiliary technicians.

Regularly performs the functions of an Environmental Quality Specialist in IPM (approximately 75% of time) including (a) responding to call and performing scheduled services, (b) planning treatments and formulating pesticides if required; and maintaining related equipment and (c) utilizing monitoring and assessment products; and d) maintaining records of service.

Specifies, orders, receives and inventories equipment and products.

Provides, as needed, service after regular working hours.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Training/experience in environmental health, urban ecology and/or urban entomology.

Must be willing to develop a working knowledge of Ecoexempt and EPA-registered pesticides and pest control products and methods as well as Federal, State and local regulations on pesticide application.

Must have Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators License and attend recertification programs, and obtain a Problem Animal Control Permit.

Must possess or be willing to develop a working knowledge of the behavior and urban ecology of various human commensal animals and parasites and their importance in health-care environments.

Must possess written and oral English language skills and basic mathematical skills in order to be able to write and maintain concise reports, read and understand pest control regulations and printed label instructions, and make calculations for proper mixing and application of pesticides.

Must possess interpersonal and organizational skills to direct and coordinate the work of others.

Must have basic computer skills, including the use of electronic communications and file creation and storage.

Must have the ability to understand building floor plans and HVAC and plumbing schematics.
